Adored his kids Jane and Ben, his dogs, biking and running and basketball and good friends, a fierce and fearless defender of the truth<\/p>&mdash; Soledad O&#39;Brien (@soledadobrien) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/soledadobrien\/status\/1511762425753878531?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 6, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His death was mourned Wednesday by journalists, media critics, politicians and admirers who took to social media to express their grief.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton described&nbsp;Boehlert&#8217;s death as terrible news, saying she was &#8220;devastated for his family and friends and will miss his critical work to counteract misinformation and media bias.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehlert was founder and editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/pressrun.media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">PressRun.media<\/a>, which produced media commentary, analysis and reporting on the political press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said in his <a href=\"https:\/\/pressrun.media\/about?utm_source=menu-dropdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">biography on the Press Run website<\/a> that he\u2019d been \u201cmonitoring right-wing misinformation for years, first as a staff writer for Salon, for 10 years as a senior fellow at Media Matters for America, and most recently as a media critic at Daily Kos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehlert had previously written about the music industry for Billboard and Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement shared with Montclair Local, Media Matters Communications Director Laura Keiter said Boehlert\u2019s \u201csharp wit and biting insight shone through in his fierce writing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis passing is a real loss for truth and will leave a void in the broader media landscape,\u201d Keiter said. \u201cWe are better for having known and worked with such a thoughtful, fearless, and passionate media critic. It was always a treat when Eric would visit the D.C. office; while he was direct and unsparing on social media, he was equally as warm, inspiring, and helpful to his colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehlert\u2019s incisive and often pointed commentary was reflected frequently in his tweets, which were sent out to his audience of more than 229,000 followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">weird to watch writers like Andrew Sullivan and Glenn Greenwald convince themselves that the gay-hating GOP isn\u2019t coming for them \u2014 that they\u2019re \u2018earned\u2019 their loyalty <br><br>they\u2019re going to learn painful lessons<\/p>&mdash; Eric Boehlert (@EricBoehlert) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricBoehlert\/status\/1509898451764625411?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 1, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boehlert was also the author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lapdogs-Press-Rolled-Over-Bush\/dp\/0743289315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lapdogs: How The Press Rolled Over For Bush<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bloggers-Bus-Internet-Changed-Politics\/dp\/1416560106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bloggers on the Bus: How The Internet Changed Politics and the Press<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He served as a frequent cable news commentator, making hundreds of television appearances to discuss the media, according to his PressRun bio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough his journalism, social media, books, and appearances on CNN and MSNBC, Eric was a fierce defender of democracy, social justice and truth in media,\u201d his family said in its statement. \u201cHe was fearless and brilliant in his investigation of hypocrisies and double standards in the media, and his contribution was priceless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fellow Montclair resident and journalist Jonathan Alter told Montclair Local he met Boehlert while working as a media critic for Newsweek in the 1980s. Being a media critic \u201cwas almost a calling\u201d for Beohlert, Alter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEric was a tremendously decent and thoughtful guy, who was also one of the best media critics in the United States,\u201d Alter said. \u201cHe could be very unsparing with his criticism, but it was acute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a media critic can be difficult; people can be critical when the lens gets turned on them, Alter said. But the press must be held accountable, and Boehlert did it so well, he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need critics to hold the press accountable to the way it should be and this is a terrible loss for them,\u201d Alter said. \u201cHe was a gentle, thoughtful and friendly person who I wish I had spent more time with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">RIP to our friend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricBoehlert?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@EricBoehlert<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hdVYeithIG\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/hdVYeithIG<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Media Matters (@mmfa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mmfa\/status\/1511779897810853891?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 6, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another Montclair resident and journalist, David Folkenflik, told Montclair Local Wednesday he had not been close with Boehlert, but the two had been friendly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember him [as] a smart reporter who became a sharp critic, a proud liberal who pursued those beliefs and analyses against what he saw as hypocrisy, laziness and unaccountable power in the press and beyond,\u201d Folkenflik said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Journalist Michael Rapoport, also of Montclair, described&nbsp;Boehlert as &#8220;tremendously passionate and thoughtful \u2014 as kind and easygoing in person, and as devoted to his family, as he was unyielding in holding the media&#8217;s feet to the fire for their failings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He cared deeply about the truth and accuracy and fairness,&#8221;&nbsp;Rapoport said. &#8220;His voice will be sorely missed, and I will deeply miss a good friend.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her tweets, O\u2019Brien described Boehlert as an \u201camazing friend&#8221; as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He fought to rescue journalism and democracy, which need saving,\u201d she wrote. She said he\u2019d been \u201cBrutal to bad media on twitter [and the] sweetest guy in real life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bohelert&#8217;s work &#8220;has never been as important as it is today in this era of relentless misinformation,&#8221; Councilman Peter Yacobellis said in a statement sent to Montclair Local.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My heart breaks knowing how devastating a loss this is for Eric&#8217;s family and friends and the entire Township of Montclair. But also the loss this is for America and protecting the integrity of the First Amendment,&#8221; Yacobellis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday night, NJ Transit said a bicyclist had been <a href=\"https:\/\/montclairlocal.news\/bicyclist-struck-killed-by-nj-transit-train-near-watchung-avenue-station\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struck and killed by a train near Watchung Avenue station in Montclair<\/a>. As of Wednesday, NJ Transit hadn\u2019t released an identity of that bicyclist, but Breslin confirmed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/ny-media-critic-eric-boehlert-dies-bicycle-20220406-vp3g65amfzec3ghc73yc5guzya-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Daily News<\/a> and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/essex\/montclair\/2022\/04\/06\/eric-boehlert-killed-train-montclair-nj\/9485476002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NorthJersey.com<\/a> that her husband had been killed in that incident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricBoehlert?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@EricBoehlert<\/a>\u2019s death is terrible news.
