Alrededor del dique de 12 kil\u00f3metros de largo ya lo largo de toda la frontera oriental de Drenthe estaba el Bourtanger Moor, un pantano inaccesible y traicionero.  Se supon\u00eda que las antiguas defensas mantendr\u00edan alejados a los enemigos durante la Guerra de los Ochenta A\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"fa7335ab-8a26-414e-ad6a-fb1ad28af065\" data-v-c06bc4da=\"\">\n<p>Uno de esos enemigos fue Christoph Bernhard von Galen, el obispo de Munster.  Popularmente conocido como Bommen Berend.  En 1665 logr\u00f3 tomar Ter Apel, pero avanzar hasta Valthe y luego Groningen por ese estrecho camino de turba no era una opci\u00f3n.  M\u00e1s tarde, Von Galen tuvo m\u00e1s \u00e9xito con una ruta a trav\u00e9s de Coevorden.
