The Iconic Zegama-Aizkorri 2025: A Trail Running Celebration

Sunday, May 25, marks a significant date for the  trail running  community, as the  Zegama-Aizkorri  race returns for its 24th edition. Nestled in the heart of the Basque Country, this legendary event is celebrated not just for its challenging course but also for the emotional connection it fosters among runners and fans alike. Although the legendary  Kilian Jornet  will not be participating this year, the race still attracts a star-studded lineup of athletes, ready to tackle one of the toughest trails in Europe.

Event Details: How to Experience the Zegama-Aizkorri

The race begins at  9:00 AM , directly from the center of  Zegama , located in  Gipuzkoa . Covering a distance of  42.195 kilometers , the course winds through the breathtaking  Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park , featuring a staggering positive elevation gain of  2,736 meters . This elevation change presents a formidable challenge, necessitating not only speed but also strategic thinking and unparalleled physical endurance.

The trail traverses the summits of  Aratz ,  Aketegi , and  Aizkorri , including technical forest sections, rocky ridges, and steep descents demanding as much mental focus as physical ability.

Key Points of the Course

Runners will encounter several notable checkpoints during the race. At  Sancti Spiritu (km 19) , a unique emotional atmosphere envelops participants, as thousands of fans line the route, creating a human corridor of cheers and encouragement. The pinnacle of the race,  Aizkorri (km 22) , reaches an altitude of  1,528 meters , serving as both a literal and metaphorical peak for the competitors. Finally,  Andraitz (km 35)  poses the last major ascent before the runners return to Zegama, setting the stage for an exhilarating finish.

Records and Reigning Champions

The current male record holder,  Kilian Jornet , clocked an impressive  3:36:40  in 2022. The female record is held by  Nienke Brinkman , who finished in  4:16:43  the same year. This year, the absence of Jornet opens the field for emerging talents and experienced runners alike.

Men’s Division: Favorites and Underdogs

In the men’s category,  Elhousine Elazzaoui  emerges as a prime contender, having secured second place in both  2023  and  2024 . With Jornet absent, another legendary figure returns: the Norwegian  Stian Angermund , who once held the record with a time of  3h45’08”  until Jornet shattered it.

Other noteworthy participants include  Manuel Merillas , the 2023 champion;  Roberto Delorenzi , the 2024  Skyrunner World Series  champion; and  Luca del Pero , who recently demonstrated his prowess by winning the half-marathon at  Transvulcania .

While established favorites dominate the headlines, potential dark horses like  Andreu Blanes  and  Antonio Martínez  could surprise on race day, despite recent health struggles.

Women’s Division: A Competitive Lineup

This year’s women’s race showcases one of the most impressive lineups in Zegama’s history, featuring three previous champions:  Sylvia Nordskar  (2024),  Oihana Kortazar  (2011 and 2012), and  Maite Maiora , who set the former record in  2017 . Additionally, many experienced competitors and hungry newcomers aim to stake their claim to the coveted prize—a  traditional axe .

Among the competitive field is the Swiss runner  Judith Wyder , a multi-time gold medalist in orientation and a highly technical mountain race winner who has yet to tackle Zegama. Young Basque talents  Sara Alonso  and  Malen Osa , both who have previously placed in the top tier during this race, are also eager to prove their mettle.

Where to Watch the Event Live

Fans can catch the thrilling action of the Zegama-Aizkorri live for free through Zegama’s  official YouTube channel  starting at  08:30 AM (CET) . Commentary will be available in  Spanish ,  Basque , and  English , courtesy of the  Golden Trail World Series .

Additionally,  EITB  will provide coverage in Basque, and the event will be accessible on the  MAX  platform and  Eurosport  channel. For real-time updates, the  Kronoak  timing system will track runner progress live.

Weather Forecast: Ideal Conditions?

Weather forecasts from  AEMET  predict partly cloudy skies with temperatures ranging from  8 to 21 °C  and a low chance of rainfall. While this may seem ideal for speed-oriented runners, high-altitude fog and moisture could still present challenges.

As Zegama approaches, anticipation builds: entering this race is a privilege, and running it is a monumental achievement. Only  225  slots are available out of  11,000 applications , emphasizing just how special this event is for serious trail runners.

Prize Money and Incentives

The stakes are high, with the  winner  and  winner  each taking home  3,000 euros and the traditional txapela . The second-place finishers earn  2,000 euros , while the third-place runners receive  1,000 euros . In total, the race distributes a hefty  20,400 euros  in awards, with additional incentives for local runners, Basques, and veterans.

Zegama is not merely a race; it represents an emotional and spiritual journey for all participants. The  Zegama-Aizkorri 2025  promises to be a celebration of resiliency, community, and the indomitable spirit of  trail running .
