This is how Helene describes the series Gilmore Girls. That series premiered long before Helene was born. Marie Løfsnæs and Helene Brox escape into older series to relax. Photo: Private Helene and Marie believe that you must have seen some of the older TV series to be able to keep up with today’s slang and pop culture. – It is a bit of a whimsical concept that something so old is so relevant today, but it has now become that way, says Marie. The girls add that everyday life today can feel scary, with reminders of negative conditions in the world from several channels. – You see it on social media and in references in recent series, so it feels very overwhelming sometimes. Then it’s very good to just be able to hide behind something that was safe then. Do you watch old TV shows? Yes, they’re so cozy!😍 Sometimes, but I’m not obsessed 🤷 No, I’d rather watch newer series😎 Show result “Comfort shows” Ingrid Moholt Waaler is host of the podcast Træsh. She has also noted that the younger generation chooses older TV series. – I have noticed that those who post videos and so-called edits of, for example, One Tree Hill have become much younger than they were previously. And then I realized that it is something the younger generation is discovering now. – I think many young people use these series as “comfort shows”, i.e. a series you can take some comfort in, says Waaler. Program leader in Træsh. Ingrid Moholt Waaler, understands why young people think it’s good to watch the older series. Photo: Henriette Dæhli She explains that these series tend to have low scores on IMDB, and that it is a long way from the world’s best TV series to these older programmes. – But I think that’s part of the reason why it’s also nice to watch. Because it’s not very deep. It does not challenge us. It’s just a comfortable place to be. It is not always necessary for the TV series to speak to you on a deeper level. Sometimes you just need to dream away a little. “One Tree Hill” is a drama series that follows the lives, loves and challenges of a group of teenagers and their families in the small town of Tree Hill. International phenomenon TV researcher and senior adviser in the Directorate of Culture, Gry Cecilie Rustad, points to three important reasons why the old TV series are popular among young people now. – Firstly, there is something to do with the technology and distribution. These series are easily available on streaming services. At the same time, they are experiencing a boom in social media, such as TikTok, to which a new audience and a new generation can flock. – And then there is this Y2K trend, which is very popular among Gen Z. These TV series define this trend. It is a treasure trove of inspiration for outfits, style and visuals, says Rustad. TV researcher and senior adviser in the Directorate of Culture, Gry Cecilie Rustad, believes accessibility, social media and the Y2K trend can explain the interest in older series. Photo: Tordis Gauteplass The third reason she points to is about how the series are structured. – There were more episodic series that were a bit more concluding. There were plot arcs, but concluding episodes and many episodes in each season. Rustad believes that the older series have a slightly easier entertainment than the new ones through the streaming services, which are often a long story over one season.
