– I feel Snapchat is new messages, really. I communicate with people on snapchat. TikTok is for entertainment, and Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration, says 19-year-old Vårinn Linnea Kvåle. 93 per cent of young people used social media daily in 2021. This is shown by a new report on young people’s media habits. It looks at the digital lives of Norwegian youth between the ages of 15 and 24. Social media Among the social media, Snapchat is the largest. As many as 84 percent use the photo-sharing app every day. Furthermore, 82 per cent use Spotify daily, 77 per cent Instagram and 67 per cent YouTube. The use of the video streaming service decreased by a full 10 percent from 2020 to 2021. Kantar writes that the reason may be that young people prefer TikTok. The much talked about application has 49 percent daily users in the age group. – We know that for social media and young platforms, it is young people who help set the agenda for how things should be. That’s what Jonas Østnes says. He is a project manager at Kantar, which has prepared the report. Photo: André Børke / news Østnes indicates that Facebook use is down to 67 percent, and that the trend is falling. Nevertheless, users are still on Facebook, because it has managed to become an important arena for planning. – They have filled a function that none of the others have. They are the number one chat feature, on Messenger. They also have groups and events. It’s not like young people use e-mail to do that. Good and bad sides At the same time that consumption is high, young people themselves are aware of the negative sides of high digital consumption. – I think it is becoming more and more difficult for people to have a face-to-face conversation with other people without picking up their mobile to feel comfortable, says Amund Romsås. Photo: André Børke / news The report also refers to the influence of certain profiles. – Social media can be a landscape where attitudes and behavior can abound freely in private environments without perhaps being noticed until it is too late. You can see quite extreme cases of that, says Frida Robøle Cavanzo. The phenomenon Andrew Tate is highlighted. – I think it is stupid that it is those who have the most controversial attitudes, who speak the loudest and say the strangest things possible, who get the most attention, says Romsås. News Although the report shows that young people like to get news from social media, they have the greatest confidence in the information from the more traditional ones. – It is a bit more professional and neutral. I don’t think influencers look so much at different sides, as perhaps news does, for example, says Nottov Jortveit. 70 percent of young people read online newspapers every day, while 30 percent watch linear TV. Photo: André Børke / news Several of the young people in the target group that news talks to think things are going a little too slowly in the traditional media. – Just as newsworthy things happen at night, trends also happen at night, which we young people catch on to much faster than the media might have time to write about. For example, Andrew Tate, I’m really over it, I don’t think it’s interesting anymore at all, says Ingunn Skjellestad Wettre. If traditional news media are to reach more young people, the advice is clear: – The tip is to use us young people for all we are worth. If you are going to reach out to the younger generation, you have to use the younger generation, says Wettre. – It doesn’t help that you stand there as an adult and say you think this is cool. You actually have to ask the ones that apply, and use the ones that apply. We are here, we want to be involved.
