Young people drop mobile phones and entertainment on long flights – news Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

Many TikTok users have caught on to the “raw dogging” trend this summer. Psychologist John Petter Fagerhaug believes it is healthy for young people to throw themselves into trends where they cut out screen use. – Then there is hope for this generation too, he says to news. If you search for “raw dogging” on TikTok, loads of videos come up of people sitting on planes for hours without doing anything other than staring into the air. They test their own limits and go viral. The goal is to manage without distractions on long flights. Without phone, entertainment and sometimes sleep. Comedian and presenter Karsten Blomvik was one of those who tried to “raw dog” a long flight in Asia this summer. – It seemed like a fun meditation exercise, he says. This is what some of the videos of the “raw dogging” trend on TikTok look like. Without food and drink “Just me and safety instructions” and “just me and flight map” write some of the TikTok users as “raw doggar” flights. On the flight, the only thing they take with them is the map or the safety information for the plane. They should not scroll, or watch entertainment. In the most extreme cases, people don’t even go to the bathroom. The latter is called idiotic by a GP in an interview with the BBC. Erling Braut Haaland also shared a picture on social media of him “raw dogga” a flight. Facsimile: Screenshot Instagram – Going to the toilet is something I have to do. And food… I’m a food monster, so I had to eat the food, says Blomvik about his experience. He managed six out of twelve hours of “raw dogging” of the flight. – One goes into such a trance, to a certain extent. When you meditate long enough, time disappears a little. So you end up finding it comfortable. – Healthy to do nothing The airlines Norse Airlines or Norwegian have not noticed anything about the trend on board their planes, but have noted the trend in social media. Norwegian Communications Manager Charlotte Holmbergh says it is positive that passengers take care not to do anything when they fly. – Many have hectic and intensive lives where a lot is happening all the time and where you always have to be available. Therefore, it can be healthy to use the time on board to do precisely nothing, she says. – You let the tanks fly. You have a good dialogue with yourself and then a lot of exciting things appear, says psychologist Fagerhaug about ditching the screen on the flight. Photo: Privat Psychologist Fagerhaug also agrees. He has been working to help people cut screen time for over ten years. He does not advise people to cut out food and drink on the journey – as the most extreme “raw doggers” do – but believes that managing without the screen has many advantages: – You sit for 17 hours on a plane and just let the thoughts come . Then you get to sort a lot and clean up your head, he says. Isn’t it a bit strange that you have to take a break from your mobile phone, when you still share it on social media afterwards? – Yes, and it becomes paradoxical. If you film yourself all the time, there is no absence of technology use, says Fagerhaug. Blomvik, for his part, says: – I can’t “raw dogga” without telling someone! – It was incredibly boring Swimmer Henrik Christiansen – who has otherwise received a lot of attention on social media due to his love of chocolate muffins – “raw dogga” the flight from Norway to Paris, when he was going to participate in the Olympics. It’s just a shorter flight, just over two hours. – Haha, it was incredibly boring. I think everyone can understand that, he wrote in an e-mail to news. Christiansen says he will not do it again. – This one time was enough, to be honest, he says to news. Christiansen adds that he has seen that the trend often refers to parents “raw dogging” long flights. Blomvik is also aware of that. – My father doesn’t sit with a newspaper or anything. He just sits there. He just flies, he says. Actually means something else The term “raw dogging” itself refers to having sex without a condom, but the trend where people “raw dogging” life itself is more recent. Researcher Emilie Owens at UiO says that the expression “raw dogging life” appeared on the internet a few years ago. – Then a user on X/Twitter compares living without therapy, prescription drugs and illegal drugs to having unprotected sex, she says. Emilie Owens is a doctoral candidate at the University of Oslo and researches children and young people and their media habits. Photo: Magnus Graham / UiO It’s an absurd comparison, and that’s precisely what makes the expression funny, says Owens. – Especially the use of “raw dogging” completely out of context: The comparison is surprising, but also satisfying, because it has such strong associations. Owens says it has now become quite common internet slang about living life. She lists examples: – You can “raw dogga” training without energy drinks and warming up, you can “raw dogga” sleep by falling asleep without help, or “raw dogga” your job by not using Google or AI. Popular among young men In the past year, young men in particular followed the trend on TikTok and shared clips of themselves doing nothing for hours. Karsten Blomvik thinks the trend is primarily popular because “it’s the most easygoing”, but adds: – And then I think there’s something in that culture that you shouldn’t take anything in, just be yourself and be tough. That there is something in the somewhat unhealthy macho culture on social media, then. “15 hours. New personal record”, wrote a TikTok user. The longer the flight, the better, one gets the impression. Gabriele de Seta at the University of Bergen researches how social media and AI affect our lives. Photo: Scott Rettberg / UiB – It’s about committing to doing something to improve, for example, concentration and the body. You often see this in men’s habits on social media, explains researcher Gabriele De Seta. Psychologist Fagerhaug sees nothing negative in the fact that it mainly appeals to men. – It doesn’t hurt anyone, and it does something good for the person. I see the masculine part as healthy competition, he says. Published 25/08/2024, at 11.12 Updated 25.08.2024, at 11.32
