With about 24 kilometers to go, the worst of them all happened. On an open stretch, the mass rollover started when one of the riders drove into the ditch and flew off the bike. It had consequences for the rest of the overall field. First, one overturned, taking several with it in the fall. Everything happened very quickly, and the rider who came behind did not get it. She came at a particularly high speed, crashed into the riders who were lying on the ground and landed hard on their backs. Uno X rider Mie Ottestad ended up in the middle of the drama. – Among other things, I ran over a bicycle, and my record went completely wrong. It was a bit scary. You get scared. You can hear the carbon hitting the asphalt. That’s the way it is, but it’s not fun when people fall over, says Ottestad to TV 2 after the stage. – Potentially life-threatening The long series of mass rollovers started already after 29 kilometers from the finish line. Then 5-6 riders fell in a turn. It seemed to go well with most people. It was not long after this overturning that TV viewers witnessed the aforementioned crash. The experts at TV 2 could not believe what they had just witnessed. – There are absurd images right now. It’s one of the worst things I’ve seen in a while. It could potentially be fatal, said TV 2’s commentator Magnus Aarre when the mass overturning occurred. – The blow she gets from behind is absolutely enormous, said expert Thea Thorsen about the rider who came at enormous speed and crashed into the riders in front. A short time later, another overturn occurred. At the time, there were around ten riders who overturned. And just before the finish line, another rider fell to the ground. Strong wind Anne Dorte Ysland and Mie Bjørdal Ottestad stayed on the bike throughout the stage, although Ottestad had major problems with the bike after navigating over someone else’s bike. – The wheel stopped completely, so it was tough at the end. But it was so hectic, so it was just a matter of surviving to the finish line, says Ottestad. The duo finished in number 28 and 50. The wind was the cause of several capsizing. There was strong wind in the area. – It was a very nervous field because of the crosswind. It was very hectic until the last lap with narrow roads and cross winds. There was a lot of overturning and complete chaos. It was just a matter of getting to the finish line in one piece, says Ottestad. Although there were many crashes, the duo had a blast. – Fortunately, I didn’t get too many overturned. When we entered the sections with a lot of crosswind, it was just a matter of staying focused. But glory, what a fun day. I had a great time, says Ysland to TV 2. Dutch Marianne Vos won the stage. – I knew we had to be focused, as the wind played a big role. I didn’t expect us to move out and stay there. Winning today is really beautiful, says Vos to the organisers. JUBILEE: Marianne Vos after she sprinted to victory. Photo: JEFF PACHOUD / AFP
