On Saturday, a group of maritime archaeologists, the Silentworld Foundation, announced that the shipwreck is located at a depth of more than 4,000 metres. The transport ship Montevideo Maru was torpedoed by an American submarine on 1 July 1942. The crew of the submarine did not know that the Japanese ship was carrying prisoners of war. According to estimates, there were 979 Australian people on the ship, at least 850 of them prisoners of war. In addition, there were civilians from 13 other countries on board.
