The police thought a Norwegian-Iranian man was on his way to the small Danish town of Ringsted to carry out an assassination attempt. He turned out to have traveled to Iran, and was arrested at an airport in Sweden a few weeks later. Danish intelligence had had him in their sights for several years when he was sentenced in Denmark in 2020 for planning murder. At the time, PST called the verdict worrying. Danish judges believed the agent had spied on the target, an anti-Iranian activist living in Ringsted, and planned to kill him. The judges believed that Iranian intelligence was the client. The whole of Denmark was shut down in the massive police operation to arrest the man in 2018. He was arrested at the airport in Sweden after recently being in Iran. Photo: Nils Meilvang \/ Ritzau Scanpix A PST report news later gained access to showed that he had previously approached PST and offered his services to Norway. Among other things, the man offered to spy on Norwegian-Iranians, news could tell at the time. Now he walks free in Norway. Has set up a new company The man convicted of assassination was transferred to serve his sentence in Norway in 2021. Now he has been released after serving two-thirds of the Danish sentence. – He was released on probation by the Correctional Service, in consultation with the PST. It significantly weakens the claim that he poses a danger, says his lawyer, Tor Martin Birkeland, to news. – PST will not confirm that parole was made in consultation with PST, replies senior advisor Eirik Veum to news. Since his release, the convicted agent has, among other things, set up a sole proprietorship that will carry out consulting activities related to information technology. The company is registered at the address where the man is registered, in Oslo. The Norwegian-Iranian has citizenship in both Norway and Iran, and can thus be deported from Norway if the Norwegian citizenship is revoked. Photo: news Organization requests that he be deported He claimed to be a refugee from Iran when he was granted asylum in Norway in 2008, but among other things celebrated the Persian New Year with the Iranian ambassador in 2018. As a Norwegian citizen, the man cannot initially be deported from the country . At the same time, he is still an Iranian citizen. After a change in the law that came into force in January 2021, originally foreign citizens can lose their Norwegian citizenship for reasons of national interests. Only when the person concerned is no longer a Norwegian citizen can the person be deported. – Either according to the general provisions of the Immigration Act, for example on the basis of a judgement, or because the person in question is considered to pose a threat to national interests, according to an assessment by PST, says senior adviser Veum in PST. Veum speaks on a general basis, and will not comment on this matter specifically. Nor does UDI wish to comment on this specific case. Several Norwegian-Iranian regime critics react strongly to the fact that the agent goes free in Norway. Norwegian-Iranian Sarah Gaulin of the organization LIM (Equality, integration, diversity) calls him a “concrete threat to the security of the kingdom”. She asks the Minister of Justice to intervene to send him out of the country. Sarah Gaulin is Norwegian and head of the organization LIM. Photo: Helene Hjelseth Holen \/ news – In cases like this, lifelong deportation from Norway should be a clear measure, says Gaulin to news. She believes that Iran’s behavior in both the Middle East and Scandinavia is a threat to Norway. – As a Norwegian, I am concerned about how the asylum system is being abused, and that we are not more consistent in revoking the citizenship of people who work for foreign intelligence services, she says. news has been in contact with the Ministry of Justice about Gaulin’s statements. They have not responded to news’s \u200b\u200binquiry. Raised the threat level Storting politician Mahmoud Farahmand (H). Photo: Lars Tore Endresen \/ Lars Tore Endresen The Norwegian-Iranian politician Mahmoud Farahmand (R) says he is surprised that the man has not already been deported to Iran. – This man has been convicted. There is sufficient evidence that he poses a threat. Here, I have confidence that the security services will do the tasks they are assigned and look after our security, says Farahmand to news. He emphasizes that, in Norway, you should basically be done with the case when you have finished serving the sentence. – But given the security policy and threat situation we are in now, I assume the security services have taken their precautions. PST recently raised the threat level in Norway to the second highest level. The reason was in particular the threat to Jewish and Israeli targets in Norway. The change occurred after assassinations against the Israeli embassies in Stockholm and Copenhagen earlier this month. Danish and Swedish police believe that criminal actors linked to Iran may be behind the attacks. For several years, Iran has been considered among the biggest threats to Norwegian security. Actors associated with Iran, which is in a heated conflict with its enemy Israel, were also singled out by PST when the threat level was raised.
