When the election results become known, almost half of the Federal Republic will be angry, cranky, shocked, perhaps even ready to fight. No one should be surprised, but it is too late for coping exercises in disappointment and frustration. The tank is not exactly filled with patience. Some may regret not doing more. Left the sofa, for example. Others will not settle for the outcome. The United States is preparing for possible chaos. Donald Trump is fighting to become president again. Photo: AFP One of them has lost. It feels dark and unfair. We have heard scare scenarios from both sides about what is going to happen in the land of opportunity, but there is only room for one candidate in “The Great White Prison”. President Harry Truman (1945–53) supposedly called it the White House, but added that it could also be glamorous. He is said to have thought that you could never feel at home in the White House if you were over five. President Harry Truman Photo: BYRON ROLLINS / AP There is always an expensive battle for the keys to the small house at the end of 16th Street on Pennsylvania Avenue. These days the mobile beeps all at once, begging for money or asking if I want to knock on doors. Voters can choose from among some of the most unpopular candidates in American history. Within their own parties, they are admittedly among the most popular. Whoever creates the best narrative, manages to drive people to the polls, climbs to the top in this championship of American history. Democracy’s stress test Here in Washington, the authorities are preparing for the ceremonial dates leading up to the inauguration. Fences and barricades have been set up so that the White House gets even further away from possible protesters. There is a visible fear of a political breakdown between the camps if the election results are delayed. Even in the streets where I live, people mark where they stand. There is a Trump sign hanging in the neighbor’s window, while on the other side of the street they have signed off with a Harris sign. In recent years, the Democrats have won the capital with over 90 percent support. Congress is also being framed these days because this is where the story of the attack on democracy on 6 January 2021 lives. There are, of course, two versions of that as well: One sees the storming as the losers’ attempt to prevent the election result from being approved. Words such as sedition and terror were used loosely. The other version, which gets the worst review here in town, is that it was a brave, patriotic attack to prevent the election from being stolen. A man is pictured during the storming of Congress on January 6, 2021. Photo: LEAH MILLIS / Reuters Donald Trump, in his third attempt to become president, calls the over 450 who received prison sentences hostages. He has taken on the role of the one who can fix the country and save civilization. For the Democrats, it is the sequel to a horror film because Trump was president for four years and now he is probably more prepared. Kamala Harris is also trying to write herself into history. She tries to give an image of the fair prosecutor who goes after criminals. And then she has ties to the American civil rights movement since her parents were active in the protests. The best story wins, but it doesn’t have to be true. Artificial intelligence, conspiracy theories and communication are mixed together. Wealthy, educated people communicate uncritically on social media. Like a movie poster, the focus is on the person, not the policy. The toxic cocktail of rumors and manipulated material can become dangerous. Elon Musk at Donald Trump’s rally. Photo: Evan Vucci / AP The unfriendly climate here has already led to threats against election workers, who wear alarm buttons and work behind bulletproof glass and doors. Aid workers are also accused. We saw that on the ground in North Carolina after one of the hurricanes there. Hurricane Helene destroyed large parts of western North Carolina. In Swannanoa, cars lined the river bank. Photo: news Disinformation and lies got in the way of the aid effort. False narratives were posted on social media, curated by supporters or the ignorant. Some claimed that donations were withheld, or rejected, by the authorities to target Republican areas. It created anger. It fueled distrust, which has good growth conditions. Even presidential candidate Trump disseminated falsehoods. He claimed the national emergency fund of the federal authorities (FEMA) was used on illegal immigrants rather than the weathermen in the swing state of North Carolina. This could be refuted. The budgets and spending are so transparent, but sometimes the story is too good and powerful to let it disappear. Therefore, government officials fear the uncertain hours and days after the votes are cast. No measurements indicate a clear and convincing victory. Instead, there may be attempts to delay a result. Lawyers in both camps can submit demands for a new count or allegations of irregularities. Such delays sow doubt and allow accusations of electoral fraud to grow in peace. A manipulated image of a counting machine, or a false message about cheating, can quickly get out of control. This election campaign has already been characterized by many upheavals and disputes. The history machine Hollywood had not been able to surpass what has happened here in recent months. A recap for new readers: an incumbent president enters the summer holidays as the party favorite. After the holiday, he has been replaced because he has become too visibly old. The challenger is shot at, but the wave of sympathy is short-lived. The challenger has legal problems, has already been convicted, but the Supreme Court turns the criminal cases against him upside down so that no trials, or sentencing, come up before the presidential election. Donald Trump has participated in two presidential debates against two different candidates. For the first time, a presidential candidate is referred to as a fascist by his opponent. – The United States is ready for a better story, former screenwriter and President Barack Obama concluded at the Democrats’ national meeting this summer. Animal-free next period Sanewashing is a word I have taken note of. It is used here for money laundering, irresponsible behavior and derogatory statements. It is a criticism of how the media covers, and helps to normalize, a presidential candidate who, had it not been for Trump, would have been politically dead a long time ago. But there are at least two things Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have in common. Both bring families bound together by divorce into the White House. It shows that they are keeping up with the American development. And both are less popular, or modern, in another important reference point: Neither of them has pets to move with. Now both dogs and cats are duly mentioned in this election campaign and we know that Americans are concerned with pot politics. Besides, they have been used to seeing a presidential couple surround themselves with something hairy. President Joe Biden throws a ball for the dog Commander in Space Christmas 2021. Kennedy Jr. The latter is better known to some as a vaccine opponent and part of this year’s presidential race. When he was seven years old, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, a salamander. Photo: Ap I know I have to round off, but I have to say that American elections are a test of endurance. Not just for the public or the review of the health of democracy. Even seeing a vice-presidential candidate out in the field takes a lot of time. There are the same rules at the election campaign event whether you come from a local newspaper or a wealthy media conglomerate. For example, a journalist must show up no later than 90 minutes before to be allowed in, said the instructions from the Democrats’ candidate. Then there won’t be much time to talk to others in the queue. If you bring camera equipment, it must be left in the venue more than five hours before the event starts. Not only will the waiting time be long. You are also without work tools. And inside the hall, it’s usually indoors now due to security and tighter times at the Secret Service, there is a restricted area for the press so you can’t mingle either. This probably belongs to the “less interesting behind the scenes” category in a correspondent’s everyday life. I try to look for bright spots. One is the story of a united United States. Often there is more that binds us together than divides us, it is repeated. But then I came across an article about marriage and moving, which created another wrinkle. Apparently, there is a pattern emerging: people move according to the politics they like, to states where the lifestyle and outlook on life match the perception of their own identity. At the same time, one no longer bothers to marry someone from the other party because it quickly becomes intractable. I note that we are back at the start after a three-month election campaign: everything is within the margin of error despite billions of advertising kroner and public meetings in central states. Nor has assassination had any particular effect on the measurements. But maybe we’ll get there in a few years where we can wipe the dust off some common values and bring back the good stories about America’s rich history?
