That they came to the Furuset library. I also greatly appreciate that PST is taking care, says Abid Raja. The left-wing politician was at the Furuset library in Oslo on Friday in connection with the Groruddalen literature festival. At the end of the festival there was a conversation on stage about Raja’s latest book. Then a man stood up, shouted and started walking towards the stage. Raja perceived it as the man “making a run” to get up to him. – He had very aggressive behaviour. There were two people who intervened and prevented him from coming up to the stage to me, says Raja. Raja says he was given bodyguards by PST on Saturday, because of the incident at the library. Deichman confirms to news that the man got up, shouted enthusiastically and eventually started walking towards the stage. They say he was stopped to prevent him from interrupting the event. Frightened by the incident, Raja himself experienced the situation as threatening. – I felt that fear. I was frightened by that incident. And I also felt a strong discomfort in sitting down and carrying out the event, says Raja. Because the conversation continued after a few minutes. Raja was then affected by the incident. – I was quite put off by this. I had a rather strong physical reaction in my own body, he says. Later, another man also stood up and shouted. It is confirmed by the library. Raja emphasizes that he does not think that situation was comparable to the man who walked towards the stage. – He stood far away and made no push to get up. That is not what this is about, he says. Abid Raja has traveled around and talked to young people about his new book. There he deals with what he believes are frightening attitudes in the Muslim community. Photo: Balsharan Kaur \/ news Want to report The police eventually came to the scene. But then the man who made his way towards the stage had left the library. They have therefore not identified the man, according to Raja. – If they clarify the identity of that person, then I would also like to report him, says Raja. Deichman says they did not call the police, but confirms that the police came to the scene some time after the incident. – Attempts at gagging In his book, Raja warns against a conservative trend among European Muslims. In the wake of the book’s launch, he has come out hard against the attitudes of forces in the Muslim community. Among other things, equality and sexual minorities. – I ask the question whether Islam threatens Western values, said Raja in Dagsnytt 18 earlier this autumn. He believes that what happened at the library is proof of how provocative it is to bring up topics that concern Muslims. – It is frightening to see how freedom of expression and democracy are being tried to be stifled in this way, especially from angry men with an immigrant background, says Raja. He fears that such incidents mean that fewer of the moderate Muslims in Norway dare to take on difficult debates. – If a person like me can be exposed to this, then I become very concerned about the state of freedom of expression for younger people. 200 people present According to communications director J\u00f8rn Johansen in Deichman, there were approx. 200 people present at the library on Friday evening. The conversation with Raja was one of several items on the programme, explains Johansen. – The whole thing was an interruption that was unpleasant and not planned and not desired. But it lasted a couple of minutes, and then the closing party continued for an hour and a half, he says. Johansen says the incident was seen as unpleasant in the hall. And that employees reacted quickly. – It was perceived as a situation in which we should react and intervene. And we did that with an employee and by contacting security guards. According to Johansen, both the man who walked towards the stage and the man who got up were asked to leave the library. Which they did without drama. J\u00f8rn Johansen in Deichman says they had brought in more employees in connection with Friday’s event. It was approx. 200 visitors. Photo: Erik Thallaug \/ Deichman Friday’s event was a closing party for the Groruddalen literature festival. – We have had various types of events and have made all assessments for all events in relation to whether there are any special considerations we must take into account, says Johansen. He says that, with the exception of Friday, the festival has gone smoothly, and that they are satisfied with the implementation. – And then this was a very boring episode that came at the closing party.
