This explains Johan Kristian Andreasen, senior lecturer at the Department of Education at the University of Agder. – There are a number of children who are left out if we leave this to the children themselves, and let them decide, says Andreasen. What are your tips for creating an inclusive Halloween celebration? Have your say further down in the matter. Andreasen is concerned with how parents can help get involved in an inclusive Halloween celebration. Photo: University of Agder Autumn party for all At Nygård school in Søgne, an autumn party is organized for all the pupils on Halloween. The Parents’ Council’s Work Committee (FAU) is behind the event together with the school. Principal Ellen Bøe Voilås and FAU leader Ronny Myrene at Nygård school in Kristiansand believe it is important that everyone has a good Halloween. Photo: Anne Martine Justvik – The aim is for all the school children to feel included on this day. The autumn party was welcomed with open arms by all the parents, says head of FAU Ronny Myrene. Myrene, principal at the school Ellen Bøe Voilås and researcher Johan Kristian Andreasen have many tips for creating a nice Halloween celebration for everyone. Think simply You don’t have to do anything drastic. It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on the event, says Andreasen. By cutting an apple in half and painting on the flat side, the children can make nice and scary pumpkin cards. This is what it might look like when students make Halloween art out of apples. Photo: Anne Martine justvik Meet the children in the homes Then the children can gather before they go out for tricks or tricks later in the evening, says FAU leader Myrene. During the autumn festival at Nygård school, a joint disco is organized for the children. Andreasen also suggests having a separate girls’ and boys’ night. Then the children can meet in each of their homes before they go trick-or-treating. Two students in the 4th grade at Nygård school make Halloween cards. Photo: Anne Martine Justvik Use nature You can, for example, organize a gathering outside. Gathering around a bonfire can be a pleasant activity, suggests Andreasen. At Nygård school they organize a scarecrow. This is something many students really look forward to. – We have made three trails outside. One of them is a scary run where several of the parents dress up in the troll forest, explains FAU leader Myrene. Talk together as parents A clear dialogue between the parents is important, explains Andreasen. – It affects the students’ learning and classroom environment that the parents know each other, says principal Bøe Voilås. Are you going to celebrate Halloween this year? Yes, of course it’s great fun! No, absolutely not, it’s silly and frivolous. Maybe, if I find a good costume Show result Myhrene at FAU says that several of the parents have contributed to the fall party they organize on Halloween being a good one. Let the children be part of the planning Ahead of the autumn festival at Nygård school, the children themselves have been able to take part in the preparations. They have made a lot of nice decor out of Legos, drawings and painted pictures. Here the children get to help make the decorations for the autumn party at school. Photo: Anne martine Justvik – They can enjoy and prepare together. They can be together and have a common experience that they take back to school with them, says principal Bøe Voilås. Be close The most important thing is that you, as a parent, are close. Only then can you ensure that everyone is included, says Andreasen. – There are a number of children who are left out if we leave this to the children themselves, and let them decide, says Andreasen.
