When screens were introduced in all schools, and parents benevolently gave their children smartphones at home, few asked questions. Few studies were cited, because they did not exist. Now we are starting to see the consequences. Screen use affects the health of our children, and now it’s time to pull the brakes. The government’s proposal for an age limit on social media, and the Minister of Education’s proposal for banning mobile phones in schools are steps in the right direction, but are not the whole answer to the major challenges of screen use among children and young people. Regulation, clear recommendations and increased knowledge are needed, also among parents. A lot of screen use can have several negative health consequences, especially in vulnerable children and young people, where the body and brain are constantly developing. It can lead to poor sleep, obesity, reduced physical activity, delayed language and motor development, and problems with social interaction. Increased screen time is also associated with emotional problems such as anxiety, depression and irritability. How is this connected? During the first five years of life, the brain develops rapidly. We are born with 130 billion brain cells, which acquire new functions through constant new connections and use. These links must be used to preserve. If nerve cells and their connections are not stimulated with a wide range of sensory impressions, as well as social, motor and cognitive experiences, the connections are lost forever. A lot of screen time in this important phase of brain development can lead to a reduced range of sensory impressions and fewer such important experiences. This means that a lot of screen time affects brain development in young children. Studies have shown that a lot of screen time during this phase can affect the microstructure of the brain. An MRI study from 2019 found pathological changes in children who spent more time on screens than recommended, without adults being involved. In these children, the brain’s white matter was more disorganized in areas associated with reading, planning, problem solving and creativity. Screen use does not necessarily affect the structure of the brain directly, but it gets in the way of other experiences that are important for brain development. The parents’ screen use is also important for the child, because it affects mood and interaction. Screen use can reduce the possibility of uninterrupted interaction between parents and children, which is fundamental for children’s emotional and cognitive development. Getting enough sleep is very important for good health. Screen use, especially before bedtime, has a significant impact on children’s sleeping habits. Certain studies show that blue light from smartphones and tablets suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates the sleep cycle. Children who spend a lot of time in front of a screen can experience several sleep-related problems, such as difficulty falling asleep, irregular sleep and reduced sleep quality. It can be difficult for children to put away an exciting screen, which in turn results in less sleep. This can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating during the day, which can negatively affect their overall well-being and school performance. Little sleep can lead to reduced pain tolerance and increased complaints in children with pain conditions. Too little sleep is associated with altered stress responses in the body, which can make you have a weaker immune system and become more susceptible to common infections such as colds. Lack of sleep can cause headaches and migraines. In children’s wards in the country, more and more people are being referred with headache complaints. Lack of sleep and a high degree of screen use are recurring problems. Preventive measures around sleep and screen use often lead to improvement. Research shows that children with a lot of screen use have an increased incidence of migraine compared to others. A study from 2022 shows that people with migraines who use the phone a lot experience stronger pain, less effect of the medicines they take and poorer sleep quality. What you spend your screen time on is very important. Research shows that using social media can reduce quality of life, especially for girls and younger women. Digital media and social comparison can be a source of body pressure. This is associated with poorer body image, eating problems and depressive symptoms. The culture of openness and sharing on social media can have positive effects for young people, but also negative ones, such as bullying and the sharing of destructive content. Young people are increasingly exposed to self-harm, violence, drug abuse and hate messages. Both technology and children’s and young people’s use of digital tools are constantly changing. Studies quickly become outdated. The impact on children and young people’s health is complex. We who work with children see that a lot of screen time has physical, psychological and social harm, especially for the most vulnerable children. We need clear national recommendations regarding screen use, with regard to time use and content for different age groups. We know enough to be able to give good advice that can help children and young people to find a better balance in screen use. The most important thing is that screen use does not displace activity and interaction with other people. This protects and promotes healthy development and good physical and mental health for everyone. It is time to take action. Send us your opinion Want to write?
