One of the cars was measured at 234 kilometers per hour on the E6. The driver was driving in a 90 zone on the E6 in Lillestrøm. Both the car and the driver’s license were seized. Others who took part in the car meet were caught at speeds between 135 and 193 kilometers per hour. – The speeds varied, of course, but all were so high that it was necessary to confiscate driving licences. The police take such speeding offenses seriously, says duty police attorney Dag-Fredrik Reymert in the East police district. Photo: Jonas Been Henriksen / news The drivers who were caught yesterday must regret being punished, according to the police attorney. – Also periods of loss of driving licence, says Reymert. – Will have enormous effect The interest organization Trygg Trafikk is concerned about this type of reckless driving. – It’s terribly fast and you put your own life in danger, and not least everyone else you might meet in traffic. It is incredibly selfish and life-threatening, says press manager Christoffer Solstad Steen in Trygg Trafikk. They are now advocating that electronic speed limits must be introduced on new cars in Norway, and point out that the technology for this already exists. Christoffer Solstad Steen, press manager at Trygg Trafikk. Photo: Jonas Been Henriksen / news – We are very much in favor of speed bumps being considered in new cars. We know that this will have an enormous effect on the number of traffic fatalities and traffic injuries, says Steen. An electronic speed limiter will be able to prevent the driver from driving over the legal speed limit. Must have both politicians and manufacturers on the team Trygg Trafikk nevertheless acknowledges that it will be difficult to introduce this in Norwegian cars. – It is a bit complicated. Political will is required to get it done, both in Norway and other countries. And then we have to have the car manufacturers on board, says Steen. But they don’t think speed bumps will be rolled out anytime soon. But over time they hope to see more willingness to do this. – Basically, I don’t think either politicians or car manufacturers stand in the way of making this happen. But we see that we are constantly taking small steps in the right direction, says Steen. I don’t think it will help. NAF is the car owners’ interest organisation. Communications adviser Nils Sødal says that they are skeptical about introducing an electronic speed limiter. Nils Sødal, senior communications advisor at NAF. Photo: Naf He points to two reasons in particular: – One is that in certain situations you may have to drive faster than the speed limit for a short period of time, for example to make room for emergency vehicles, says Sødal. – The second is that it is unlikely that it will help against the type of rough driving we saw yesterday. It was a very special situation with unacceptable wild driving, he adds. Sødal believes that those who drive like this will probably be able to find ways to deactivate the speed limiter. – It is also important to remember that the vast majority of drivers drive responsibly and follow the speed limits, says Sødal.
