How much of what happens in the series is true, and what is nonsense? We start with something you can’t help but notice. What happened to the hair style? Reiar heir Christian is back! With new welding. Photo: Maipo The first episode offers a joyful reunion with many characters. We start in 1987, and something has happened to the welding of most of the characters. For example, Christian has let his hair grow, especially on the back of his neck. Here the series creators hit the mark! This is how it used to look in the 1980s. In Norway, the weld was called “hockey weld”, and it was top fashion. David Bowie was fond of hockey. Here in 1987. The Norwegian band “Creation” also had impressive hockey welds in the Melodi Grand Prix in 1986. Jarl Goli with a majestic hockey weld, also in 1986. The hairstyle has made a small comeback today, nevertheless the “Lykkeland” creators struggled to find enough extras with hockey welding. Last winter they had to go out and call for men with a Stavanger dialect and long hair on the back of their necks. Did the divers wear HPNS? The third season deals, among other things, with how the diving profession is changing. In the first episode, they talk about HPNS, after Martin has a problem during a test dive. Martin the diver is back. He gets into trouble during a test dive. Photo: Maipo Film/news It stands for High Pressure Nervous Syndrome. It is true that several divers were affected by HPNS, or high pressure nerve syndrome, as we say in Norwegian. It is a diving-related disorder, which can occur when you dive deeper than 100 metres. Symptoms can be nausea, dizziness, tremors and difficulty concentrating. Just like Martin gets in the episode. Did survival suits suddenly become commonplace in the helicopter? Yes. In the first seasons of “Lykkeland”, the oil workers wear normal clothes when they sit in the helicopter on their way to work on the platform. In the third season, they are suddenly wearing orange survival suits. This reflects a development that actually happened. Reindeer on the way to the platform before and after the new safety rules. In the 1980s, the oil companies began to think more about health, the environment and safety, and the requirements became stricter. Survival suits became a new standard in the helicopter. There had been several accidents offshore, for example several helicopters had had to make emergency landings in the North Sea. Although the passengers survived the landing, they risked losing their lives if they ended up in the cold North Sea without life jackets. Several point to the fact that the tragedy on the Alexander Kielland platform in particular was a turning point when it comes to offshore safety in general. When the platform overturned, only eight of the 212 people on Kielland had time to put on life jackets. Ulukka made a strong contribution to the tightening of requirements for preparedness and safety equipment. But isn’t that… Herman Flesvig? Comedian Herman Flesvig in the role of Sture Molvik. Photo: Maipo/news Of course it is! Many became familiar with the comedian in the successful series “Førstegangsjenesten”. What does the comedian do in the third season of “Lykkeland”? Herman Flesvig took TV viewers by storm, among other things as Tanja-Laila Gaup in “The First Service”. Yes, according to director Petter Næss, Flesvig would like to do a serious role. He has got that, in the role of the engineer Sture Molvik. We can reveal that the TV viewers will see more of him in the coming episodes. Previously, Flesvig had a role in the series “Beforeigners”, but apart from that, this is the first time he has a major role in a drama production. Did we have Donald soda in the 1980s? Photo: Maipo Reiar’s daughter Marie has aged a few years since the last time. She is a keen sailor, and gets Donald soda after sailing training. Found it? Sure found Donald soda! It was a popular soft drink that was made by several different manufacturers. Many children were used to getting Donald soft drinks at birthday parties. A few years ago, news wrote about Tove Nilssen, who has a Disney collection worth several hundred thousand kroner. The Donald soda is part of the collection. Donald soda is no longer made in Norway, but could look like this. Photo: Helena Rønning Did oil workers lose their fingers in accidents? Quite early in the first episode, the oil worker Rein is unlucky and gets his finger cut off on the platform. The impression from the series is that it was quite ordinary. Did that happen? We have asked the former Petroleum Safety Authority, which is now called the Norwegian Maritime Safety Authority. Rein has been unlucky and is on sick leave after an accident on the drilling deck. – Yes, this happened a number of times. That’s what Øyvind Tuntland of the Danish Maritime Industry Authority says. Fingers were particularly exposed. He explains that the drilling deck was a risky place to work, because it was always slippery due to a lot of oil sludge. As a result, it was difficult to find one’s feet, while people were working with equipment that was both very heavy. Thus things went wrong a number of times. This was, among other things, why there was a demand for mechanical pipe handling on the drilling deck. Was basketball big in Norway in the 1980s? The character Marius is in the third season, and since the last he has become a youth. He drives a car and listens to “Timbuk 3”. In addition, Marius plays basketball. Marius has grown older and can drive a car. Photo: Maipo Was basketball a popular sport in Norway? Yes, here is “Lykkeland” on the label. According to the Norwegian Basketball Association, the 1980s and especially the 1990s marked a breakthrough for the sport in Norway. Marius has started playing basketball. – This is due, among other things, to the union investing in recruitment during the period. In addition, Norwegian clubs started to bring in semi-professional players from abroad – especially from the USA, says Tor Christian Bakken, vice-president of the Norwegian Basketball Association, NBBF. He adds that the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992 had a lot to say, because then the USA participated with its famous “Dream Team”. The players Michael Jordan, “Magic” Johnson and Larry Bird had a great effect on interest. Michael Jordan jumps high over team player “Magic” Johnson, and manages to knock the ball away to the opponents during the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992. Photo: Susan Ragan / Ap – Suddenly we had a problem with getting enough hall time, trainers and referees for everyone who wanted play basketball, says Bakken. Is it true that there was zero activity at Mongstad? In the series, the character Anna is shocked, because she learns completely by chance that nothing is happening at the Mongstad oil refinery. Anna still works in the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, and gets a shock in the first episode. Photo: Maipo Film/news Is this based on the truth? Yes, and this is a case that attracted enormous attention when it first became known. The media called what happened the “Mongstad scandal”. See newscast from news about the Mongstad scandal in 1987. What happened, simply explained, was that Statoil blew the budget when they built out the oil refinery at Mongstad. They were unable to operate the oil refinery. The first notices of budget overruns came in September 1987. Then there was talk of overruns of NOK 3.8 billion, but the final sum was even higher.
