Where you feel many different sensations at the same time. It is absolutely the worst thing I have experienced on a sports field and one of the worst things I have experienced in my life, says Pål Haugen Lillefosse to news. He limps down the stairs at the Olympiatoppen in Oslo, on his way to his first training sessions after the injury. He has just been selected for a new year on the national team in athletics, and is followed closely. – First I have to learn to walk, he says with a small smile. It is still unknown whether he can compete next year after he was wheeled out in “a kind of Kiwi shopping cart” from the Stade de France during the games this summer. Fearing the worst – I actually think that what made me most nervous wasn’t exactly when I was sitting in that chair or the fact that I wasn’t allowed to jump, but that I thought I would never jump again. THE DREAM BROKEN: – It was a miserable chair!, jokes Lillefosse to news. Photo: Bernat Armangue / AP Things went wrong during the warm-up. He suffered a rupture in his Achilles tendon, and never got to start the Olympic competition. – It was a cocktail of feelings. Of being angry. Of being sad. Of just not knowing what’s going on, actually. He describes the feeling after limping out of the stream as shock and panic. Tears rolled down on the way out of the stadium. – It took quite a long time before I got to see someone I know, so that I calmed down the situation a bit. I completely panicked and kept fainting, says Lillefosse. Pole vaulter Pål Haugen Lillefosse injures himself during the warm-up for qualifying for the Olympics. – He realized that I shouldn’t be alone. The situation calmed down a bit when he got to see national team player Ove Talsnes and coach Bjørn Åge Herdlevær. He was allowed to breathe a little. – It was almost difficult for me to accept that it turned out that way. So there were a lot of tears and actually breakdowns, almost, in the first two weeks. Fortunately, dad was with me on the trip. He noticed that I shouldn’t be alone so much. Pål Haugen Lillefosse (23) Name: Pål Haugen Lillefosse Born: 4 June 2001 Club: Fana IL Practice: Pole vault Personal record: 5.86 meters Merits: Senior: European Championship bronze in Munich in 2022 Senior: National Championship gold in 2022 and 2023 Senior: NM gold indoors (4) U23: EC bronze in Espoo in 2023 U20: EC gold in Borås in 2019 U18: EC gold in Györ in 2018 U18: EC bronze in 100 meters in Györ in 2018 – When did your father realize it was dark here? – I’m actually quite good at wearing a mask, but I can be quite bad at it when I’m with my family. So when I came home (from Paris), I couldn’t hold it back, Lillefosse says – and adds: – He hadn’t seen me that way because of my sporting performance. Because I have not been in that situation. OPERATED: Here the Achilles tendon ruptured. Photo: Anders Engeland / news – The boy was in zero mood At home in Bergen, dad Arne Lillefosse was worried about his son. He heard over the phone that things were not good, and wanted to get his son home as quickly as possible. – I have never seen him so broken. Then everything was black. Both in terms of mood and … He was broken down both physically and mentally when he came home, says Arne Lillefosse to news. The son was in bed and on the sofa a lot. As a parent it hurt. – There was zero mood in the boy. I think he was tired of everything. Sports, didn’t want to do anything, couldn’t do anything. BRONZE GUT: Father and son in Munich. Lillefosse water bronze. Photo: Privat / Privat The father did not get involved much in sports, but quickly realized that he could not “wrap things up”. It was about showing understanding for the dire situation. – I can’t fuss and try to say things like… “Yes, you’re young, and you have a future ahead of you” and the like. Then I would probably have been beaten down. Gradually, a change took place, but it took time. It wasn’t until two or three weeks after his return that he began to see the moody flashes. Now he sees them more and more often. UNDER TREATMENT: Pål Haugen Lillefosse is stiff and stiff in his foot, which was hit. He receives very good follow-up from Olympiatoppen. Photo: Anders Engeland / news Didn’t know if he wanted to continue Pål Haugen Lillefosse is out of what he describes as a “dark hole”. Along the way, he entertained the idea of giving up athletics. – For the first two weeks, I was so down that I didn’t quite know if I wanted to come back at all. And it’s a strange feeling, because it’s something I’ve never thought about in my life before. The idea that he did not want to continue with athletics gained more and more ground after he was asked a direct question. – I think it was as direct as: “Would you like to do this tomorrow?”. And then I said yes. But the more I thought about it, the more uncertain I became, says Lillefosse. DIFFERENCE: The muscles have almost disappeared from the right leg of Lillefosse. Photo: Anders Engeland / news The muscles in the right leg have almost disappeared. It is hard to do the simplest exercises. Lillefosse is on his way into a treadmill, which delimits the weight down towards the ground. The pole vaulter walks 600 meters in the mill and is exhausted. – It’s the closest I’ve been to walking since Paris. I will feel an ease when I manage to do it out on the street. Until then, I must have aids to be able to walk normally. Uncertain future The 23-year-old has slowly started on the way back, but when he will be back is impossible to determine. Maybe next year, maybe the year after. – It will be exciting to follow that process as well. It is a new experience for me. Going from zero, meaning not being able to go. From not being able to walk to jumping. There are two different verders. Then I look forward to seeing, following my own progression from one world to the other, says Lillefosse. ANTI-GRAVITY: Pål Haugen Lillefosse strolls on a treadmill that limits the weight down to the ground. Photo: Anders Engeland / news The next major championship is the World Cup in Tokyo in 2025. After that, a year awaits with “only” the EC in Birmingham and a new mini-championship in Budapest in 2026. – I’m not going to rush anything and take some extra chances to get to the WC. Of course, there are consequences to taking it long-term as well. Los Angeles 2028 is what I have said is my main priority.
