An alternative is culling. The Directorate of Fisheries is out in the Oslofjord with a patrol vessel to observe the situation. They are in dialogue with the police and veterinarian to discuss further measures. – We are now probing further measures, where euthanasia can be a real alternative, says Jdaini. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE FROM FREYA: Senior communications adviser in the Directorate of Fisheries, Nadia Jdaini says that the Directorate is afraid that the walrus will harm someone. Photo: The Directorate of Fisheries The Directorate has observed several potentially dangerous situations at the Kadettangen bathing area outside Oslo this week. They have documented that people bathe with the walrus. Adults also visit Freya at the water’s edge with their children to take pictures. – We are talking about partly large crowds of all ages, where all clearly deviate from the current recommendations to keep a distance, says Jdaini. TAKING CHANCES: Many move too close to Freya. The walrus is stressed by large crowds. Photo: Olav D\u00f8vik \/ news Impaired animal welfare – The fact that the walrus has now become an attraction escalates the need for further measures. Our biggest fear is that people could get hurt, says Jdaini. – Again, we strongly recommend that the public keep their distance where the walrus has been observed and not bathe with it. It is for one’s own safety, and with animal welfare in mind, says Jdaini. The Directorate of Fisheries is in continuous dialogue with a veterinarian, who assesses animal welfare. – Animal welfare is clearly weakened. The walrus does not get enough rest and the professionals we are in dialogue with consider her to be stressed, says Nadia Jdaini. Freya became well known after a visit to Krager\u00f8 earlier this summer, where she relaxed on several leisure boats. After that she swam further, and has stayed in and around the Oslo Fjord.
