No matter what he does, the same things happen. It is somewhat the same feeling you get about Manchester United now. On Sunday, the Red Devils lost 2–1 at home to Brighton in the league opener. They looked as shaky as when they finished sixth in May, but it wasn’t just the game that felt repetitive. This whole summer has been a collection of problems that have already hit United. They have a new coach and three new players. But as an institution, United seems just as sluggish as before. Substitutes at the top This in a time that should offer a small revolution. Already in April, Erik ten Hag was ready as coach, with the aim of getting back the titles and party football. The stable had to be overhauled, of course. When Ten Hag also demanded changes to the recruitment process – and got it – it seemed that United were finally on the way to something new. FROM THE START: Ten Hag gave Christian Eriksen confidence from the start. Photo: TOBY MELVILLE / Reuters But against Brighton, the team was almost as before. United started with nine players who were there last season. They fielded without a striker, with playmaker Christian Eriksen as substitute at the top, before they were rewarded with zero points and a pipe concert. Nevertheless, it is the effort off the pitch that should be praised the most. Almost everything that has happened in recent months has hit United before. Old acquaintances One of them is the tendency to buy players the coach knows from previous jobs. In 2013, David Moyes brought in his faithful soldier Marouane Fellaini, and later José Mourinho received a number of old acquaintances. This summer the same thing happened. United have brought in stopper Lisandro Martínez, who played for Ten Hag in Ajax; Christian Eriksen, who used to play in Ajax; and Tyrell Malacia, who came from Feyenoord, one of Ajax’s rivals. Now they are hunting Frenkie de Jong, who played under Ten Hag in Ajax. They should also have inquired about Antony, a winger from … Ajax. It is fine to bring in such names as long as they deliver, but from the outside it is strange that a club with United’s resources cannot cough up other alternatives than those Ten Hag knows about himself. A club like Liverpool has analysts and scouts in every corner of the world who work together to give the head coach more options. In United, one would think that Ten Hag scrolls down the contact list and calls those who are available. The summer soap opera Then we have the saga of the United star struggling to settle down. New players should preferably be in place in June, so they can establish themselves privately and sportingly. Just about every time United sign a big name, it happens in August. It was like this with Paul Pogba, and not least Harry Maguire after a long soap opera. In 2020, United spent the entire summer chasing Jadon Sancho, without success. He only came last year. THE CHARGE: Ten Hag wants to sign his former pupil Frankie de Jong. Photo: Sam Navarro / Reuters This summer has been all about De Jong. He is the playmaker Ten Hag must have; the genius who will give United the ball distributor they have been missing for many years. But De Jong is at odds with Barcelona, who owe him around NOK 200 million in salary, and Chelsea also want De Jong. It’s all a mess that may not be cleared up before the deadline expires on September 1. So far, Ten Hag only have Fred and Scott McTominay – “McFred” – a duo that is maligned, but which United fall back on again and again. The star who wants to leave It doesn’t just take time for United to get players in. It also takes time to get them out. All too often, a star has wanted out of Old Trafford and caused turmoil in the summer. For a long time it blew around Paul Pogba, thanks to rumors and comments from the agent Mino Raiola. In 2019, Pogba said outright that he wanted to leave. Nevertheless, he stayed for three more years, before leaving for free this summer. Now it is Cristiano Ronaldo who wants out. The striker was away from the pre-season in Asia, while agent Jorge Mendes offered him to a number of clubs – without a nip. THE BENCH: Cristiano Ronaldo started the first game of the season on the sidelines. Photo: Dave Thompson / AP Without a proper start to the season, Ronaldo started on the bench against Brighton. United still do not know what to do with him, and the situation will spread uncertainty as long as it is not clarified. Who has United approached to resolve the issue? Sir Alex Ferguson. The nostalgic move The legendary 80-year-old was hired as an adviser in July after rumors of Ronaldo’s displeasure emerged. Also when Ronaldo was brought in last year, Ferguson was involved. BACK: Sir Alex Ferguson has many years behind him at United. Now he is back in a new role. Photo: RUSSELL CHEYNE / Reuters Among major teams, only United hold so firmly to their own past. The signing of Ronaldo was also more about nostalgia than rational team building. Now that he wants out, and Anthony Martial is injured, United need a striker. They can go for an emergency solution. We have also seen this before. The emergency striker The name this time is Marco Arnautović, the 33-year-old striker from Bologna, who The Athletic claims United want. Most thought he was finished in England when he left for Chinese side Shanghai Port in 2019. But United seem to like old strikers who have played in China. Just think back to January 2020, when United had Marcus Rashford injured. Then, under Solskjær, they borrowed Odion Ighalo from Chinese Shanghai Shenhua. Ighalo was 30 years old and by all accounts finished in England, but United brought him back. The following summer, United signed 33-year-old Edinson Cavani as late as October. Of the last five established strikers United have brought in, four have been 30 years or older. Arnautović is also an old acquaintance. He scored 12 league goals for FC Twente in 2008/09, then under Steve McClaren, with Ten Hag as assistant. Can he strike? Maybe. But where Liverpool and Manchester City secured their strikers in mid-June, United are still characterized by haste and desperation. Arnautović is not a signing a well-run club should consider. Indeed, the interest in Arnautović sums up everything that is wrong with United. In other words, everything is as before. It’s a pity for Ten Hag, who is said to have done a good job on the training ground, and who was supposed to usher in a new era. Now United can enter a season that they have already experienced before.

ttn-69

In the film classic Groundhog Day (1993), the distraught weatherman Phil Connors wakes up to the same day every day.
