They will do that for another week, says the Israeli army. On Friday, 13 Palestinians were killed in a series of airstrikes against various targets in Gaza. One of them was a five-year-old girl. One of the top leaders of the Islamic Holy War group was also killed. Israel says it is Islamic Holy War that is the target of the attacks, and that the group poses an “imminent threat.” Rockets are also fired at Israel from Gaza. Photo: MAHMUD HAMS \/ AFP Nowhere to flee The fact that the attacks can continue for a week creates deep despair in a war-weary population. That’s according to country director for Norwegian People’s Aid in Gaza, Anja Riiser. It is only 15 months since the last major war, and parts of Gaza are still in ruins. Now new attacks are coming. – People are sitting at home and are terrified of what will happen. The people in Gaza have nowhere to flee, says Riiser to news. Around two million people live in the Gaza Strip. It is one of the world’s most densely populated areas. When the bombs fall, people cannot leave the area. Gaza borders Israel and Egypt, and all border posts are closed. Neither Riiser nor other internationals in Gaza have the opportunity to get out now, according to Riiser. Just before, the neighborhood was hit by an Israeli attack. She and the neighbors even have a bag with the most important things standing by the exit door. – We just have to hope that Israel gives us enough time to get out, if they are going to bomb something near here, says Riiser. Usually the Israelis warn of incoming attacks. But not always. Hesham, one of four disabled siblings, sits in the ruins of the house hit by an Israeli attack in Gaza City. Photo: IBRAHEEM ABU MUSTAFA \/ Reuters Lack of electricity According to Israeli newspapers, there are currently no discussions about a ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Holy War. Gaza’s only power plant was shut down today due to a lack of gasoline. In the days leading up to the attacks that started on Friday, the border posts have also been closed for goods. Now everyone is dependent on their own generators, as long as the petrol lasts, says Riiser. This also applies to the hospitals in Gaza. – Gaza is already almost without electricity. 70 percent of the population is already dependent on food aid, says Riiser to news. There are few reserves in Gaza. The fact that the border posts are closed to goods means that animals do not get animal feed, there is a shortage of medicine and petrol. Hamas, which rules Gaza, has sent out a message that there is no food shortage and that it will crack down on attempts to raise food prices to profit from the crisis. Photo: MOHAMMED ABED \/ AFP It was the arrest of Bassam al-Saadi, the leader of the Islamic Holy War in Palestine, that triggered the conflict this time. He was arrested in the West Bank city of Jenin earlier this week. On Saturday, Israel also arrested 19 other members of the Islamic Holy War group. According to Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, Israel has already executed “many terrorists who planned to send rockets into Israel” since Israel began its attacks on Gaza on Friday. Ordinary people in Gaza pay a high price, says Anja Riiser. – It is said here that what is conceived in the West Bank is born in Gaza. In other words, things that happen in the West Bank lead to the people of Gaza having to pay the price. That is what has happened again now, says Riiser. Norway worried Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Ap) says that she is very concerned about the escalation in and around Gaza. – I urge everyone involved to reduce tensions, show restraint and protect the civilian population, says the foreign minister in a press release on Saturday. Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt Photo: Stian Lysberg Solum \/ NTB Marthe Heian Engdal, deputy head of NOREF, Center for International Conflict Resolution, says the situation is so tense that conflicts like this will flare up at regular intervals. – It’s a pressure cooker. It’s a tense situation all the time, then it flares up every now and then. It is a dramatic humanitarian situation for the people who live there, and it is a terribly deadlocked political situation. But none of the causes of the conflict can be fixed, says Heian-Engdal. She believes the chances of getting to grips with the causes of the conflict are even lower now, with an ongoing major war in Europe and high tension between China and Taiwan. – Regardless of whether this becomes a big or a small war, nothing will be fixed. We will be in the same situation in a few or many months again, says Heian-Engdal.
\n

\n
ttn-69 <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
On Saturday night, the rocket attacks against the Gaza Strip will continue.
