This is what the health authorities in the Gaza Strip say to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. A spokesperson for the Israeli defense estimated that 15 members of the Islamic Jihad group were killed in the attack. They call the attack preventive, and that the attack is aimed at terrorists. In other words, there is varying information about the death toll. During the night to Saturday, there have been reports that air defense sirens are going off in Israel, and Islamic Jihad claims that they have sent 100 rockets from the Gaza Strip towards Israel. That is what the news agency AFP writes. Arrests in the West Bank At the same time, the Israeli army says that they have arrested 19 members of Islamic Jihad in the West Bank, reports AFP. They say security forces made the arrests during a raid in several places in the occupied area in the morning hours on Saturday. The escalation we are now seeing in the Gaza Strip comes after Israel arrested a key member of Islamic Jihad earlier this week. This has led to increased tensions, and Israeli authorities say they have feared retaliation from the Palestinian side. – People are waiting for new attacks – Everyone is waiting for a war. We are on social media and have contact with each other. We expect a war, but pray for peace, says Anja Riiser, who leads Norwegian People’s Aid’s work in Gaza. She tells of a hectic day, which has now turned into a quiet evening. – Right now it is completely quiet. There has been a lot of traffic. People have made purchases because they expect escalation. Now the sun is setting and it is completely quiet. People are sitting at home and waiting for attacks, says Riiser The feelings were many in Gaza after today’s attack. Photo: IBRAHEEM ABU MUSTAFA \/ Reuters She says that she has recently received information of several air strikes from Israel this evening. This is information that was confirmed by several news agencies on Friday evening. – I talked to my neighbours. Their children are completely in shock. These are young children who remember what it was like 15 months ago, says Riiser, and refers to the many attacks against Gaza in May last year. Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt is following the situation, and will make a statement this evening. – I am very worried about the escalation in and around Gaza. I urge all involved to reduce tensions, exercise restraint and protect the civilian population, writes Huitfeldt in a statement sent via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ communications department. Threats from Israel’s Prime Minister Prime Minister of Israel, Yair Lapid, and Defense Minister Benny Gantz, met before the attack, to get a briefing on the security situation in Gaza. – To our enemies, and to the leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, I say clearly – they have run out of time, Gantz is said to have said at the start of the meeting, according to Haaretz. – My government will not allow terrorist organizations to set their agenda in the Gaza Strip and threaten Israeli citizens, says Lapid according to Haaretz. Friday’s attack on Gaza comes after a tense week that started with Israel imprisoning one of Islamic Jihad’s commanders. This arrest increases fears in Israel of revenge attacks from Gaza. Islamic Jihad is against the existence of the state of Israel, and has been behind several rockets in the direction of Israel and carried out suicide attacks. Smoke rises from Gaza City. People in Gaza expect more attacks in the coming days. Photo: Hatem Moussa \/ AP Publication of GPS coordinates creates fear There are no places in Gaza where people feel safe, claims Riiser. She says that people she talks to in Gaza fear that Israel may now attack places that they previously did not want to attack. This fear has arisen because earlier this week Israel published GPS coordinates of places where they believe Hamas has built tunnels. Several of these coordinates are close to buildings such as hospitals, schools and universities. The newspaper The Times of Israel is among those who have mentioned the GPS coordinates in the past. It is not known that schools, universities or hospitals have been hit by Israeli airstrikes. At least 40 people are said to be injured after the Israeli air attack on Gaza. Photo: MOHAMMED ABED \/ AFP After the attack today, Islamic Jihad sent out a message, in which they confirm that one of the group’s leaders, Tayseer al-Jabari ‘Abu Mahmud, has been killed. Subsequently, the death toll has risen to at least ten dead, and in addition at least 79 people are said to have been injured. One of those killed is a five-year-old girl, the jihadist group claims. – Not finished yet Islamic Jihad’s secretary general shows no signs that the group will surrender, despite the attack on one of their leaders. – This is a day where the goal is to win, and our enemies must understand that there will be war without anyone surrendering, says Ziad al-Nakhala. Friday’s attack is part of an offensive that has been named “Dawn Rising”, where the aim is to crack down on Islamic Jihad. – We are not done yet, says a spokesperson for the Israeli army, according to the AFP news agency. Many have turned up to help in the relief work after the deadly attack. Photo: MAHMUD HAMS \/ AFP Riiser says that Gaza has been closed for four days now, and that people are preparing for a further escalation in the future. Israel defends the attack The Israeli embassy in Oslo defends the Israeli attack on Gaza City on Friday in which eight people were killed, among them commander Tayseer al-Jabari in Islamic Jihad. – This was necessary to neutralize the threat to Israeli citizens and society along the Gaza Strip, the embassy wrote in an email. Israeli authorities say that the country’s forces are working in a targeted manner to target jihadists, and that the attack on Friday hit units that were preparing rocket attacks against Israel.
\n

\n
ttn-69 <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
A total of ten people were killed in the air attack on Gaza on Friday.
