Figures from Israeli authorities show that around 1,200 civilians and soldiers were killed in connection with the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. 287 Israeli soldiers have been killed since October 27, 2023. Blinken is on a new tour of the Middle East to try to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas on a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Qatar and Egypt are brokers for the draft ceasefire tabled by US President Joe Biden on 31 May. The proposal was also adopted by the UN Security Council on Monday. – We are witnessing a shift in this conflict recently. There is now a clear and distinct message to end the conflict, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said at the press conference, according to the Reuters news agency. When asked about the efforts of Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement, Sheik Mohammed said that “both sides had to be pushed to get an agreement and that both had opposed it.” Correspondent Yama Wolasmal explains the ceasefire proposal and what problems may arise. – Get Israeli forces out There is still doubt as to whether it is possible to reach a ceasefire agreement. On Tuesday, Hamas submitted a response to the draft agreement to the mediator countries Egypt and Qatar, in which they propose changes. Among other things, they are said to have requested that the agreement include a timeline for the ceasefire. They also demand a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and a prisoner exchange agreement. Blinken says some of the changes Hamas wants in the draft ceasefire agreement can work, but that others cannot. Israel interpreted this as Hamas rejecting the proposal. – Some of Hamas’ proposals go beyond what they have previously accepted, says Blinken Hamas and Islamic Jihad issued a joint statement on Tuesday evening. In the statement, which Reuters quotes, the groups write that they are ready to reach an agreement to stop the war in Gaza. “The US government is being tested on whether it delivers on its obligations to force the occupation to immediately end the war by complying with the UN Security Council resolution,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said on Tuesday. A spokesperson for Israel’s government says the proposed ceasefire agreement enables Israel to achieve the goals it has set to end the war. – Israel will not end the war until all the war goals have been achieved: Destroy Hamas’s military capabilities and ability to govern, release all hostages and ensure that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel in the future, says a spokesperson for the Israeli government who will not stand forward with names, writes the Reuters news agency. Støre: Both parties must be with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre – It is at least a first step, says Støre to news. He emphasizes, however, that the Hamas leaders have so far only agreed to agree to talks about the proposal. But Støre believes it is positive that the UN Security Council has managed to come together on the decision, which is the first adopted resolution on the Gaza war. Possible air attack On Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reports that the air raid alerts are going off in the port city of Haifa, in the north of Israel. They warn of a possible air attack, writes Reuters. It does not appear from which direction it may come from. Earlier on Tuesday, the IDF said it had intercepted “a suspicious air target” outside Haifa. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says that both Palestinian armed groups and the Israeli forces may have committed war crimes over the weekend. Reference is made to the Israeli rescue operation where four hostages were taken out. The Palestinian health authorities say at least 274 Palestinians were killed in the attack, while the IDF says around 100 people died.
