He is hardly more than 16 years old, dressed in black and with a clean-shaven head. Maksim would like to become a soldier. The training is part of the offer for the children in one of the parks in Nizhny Novgorod. A slightly younger boy is happy to be photographed by his mother with the Kalashnikov. Russia’s national day was marked by patriotism, weapons and a self-assurance linked to the war in Ukraine. A national day with changed content When the Russian National Assembly decided that 12 June should be a public holiday in 1992, it was to celebrate the fact that the Russian Union Republic declared itself “sovereign” in relation to the Soviet Union two years earlier. The Russian constitution and Russian laws were to be superior to Soviet laws. It was perceived as a declaration of independence aimed at those who only wanted cautious reforms of the Soviet system. EXHIBITION: The weapons are on display when Russian nationalism is celebrated on National Day. Photo: Gro Holm \/ news But Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev lost the power struggle against Russian President Boris Yeltsin. On 25 December 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolved. Many Russians disliked it. Already in 1998, two years before Putin became president, the day was renamed “Russia Day”. One should no longer celebrate the declaration of sovereignty. Now it is more important than ever for the Russian president to keep multinational Russia together. Putin is terrified that national minorities will do what the Chechens did in the 1990s – demand secession. Therefore, all the focus is now on unity across ethnic differences. The children are the key. They don’t go on a children’s train. But the girls learn how important it is to give birth to many children. And the boys learn to handle weapons from their early teens. CHILDREN’S PLAY ON AN ARMORED WAGON: This is how these children celebrated National Day. Photo: Gro Holm \/ news That is to say \u2013 the girls also learn how important it is to get an education. They are needed in the economy. That is why we met young girls who are training to work with nuclear weapons. – We are needed to defend our country against all those who want to destroy it, said one of them. She is good at math. As a good patriot, she will use it for something. Proud of the country, mixed to the war Nizhny Novgorod is one of the centers of Russia’s defense industry. Compared to the flagpole, the Russian flag was tiny. But the Russian national anthem was played from huge loudspeakers surrounded by old tanks and warplanes. GRANTED OUT MEDALS: Vladimir Putin handed out medals in the Kremlin on Wednesday. Photo: Sergey Guneev \/ Reuters Everything from cadets to retired military personnel stood in tight vigil when the national anthem was played. – Europe is over. The Europe we knew and respected, we no longer see. And we would rather have something to do with it, says Vasilij Zukhanov. He is a member of the city council of Nizhny Novgorod. Zukhanov admits that Russia is struggling with a labor shortage. But I am convinced that the problems will be solved with new technology and increased productivity. President Vladimir Putin said during the awarding of medals to “heroes of labor” and others in the Kremlin that it is patriotism that unites Russians. He also said that “the whole country” supports the heroes of the “special military operation”, which is the name he uses for the war in Ukraine. And in Nizhny Novgorod it is certain that they will win the war. When asked about a possible loss, the friends Valentina Lyndina and Galina Agapova answer bluntly: SURE: Galina Agapova and Valentina Lyndina are convinced that Russia will win the war in Ukraine. Photo: Gro Holm \/ news \u2013 No, never. Russia will win for sure, they reply in unison. When news first asked if the war casts a shadow over the national day, it took almost half a minute for Valentina to figure out what to answer. She ended by saying that “we support our boys”.
