We are talking about both golden eagles and sea eagles, says Haugan Schei to news. Nordland County Council will now process the statement. – I hope that we will get a majority in the county council. The statement will then be sent to the ministry and the representatives of the Storting, so that we can be pressured to get this done as soon as possible, says Schei. Stable population According to Rovdata, the current eagle population is considered stable, and within the limits set by the Storting in 2004. – There are no cases where sea eagles have preyed on healthy animals. We have two documented cases where sea eagles have attacked animals that were very sick and in a coma, says Martin Eggen, who is a nature conservation advisor at BirdLife Norway. Photo: SYNNØVE NABER KÅSETH He points out that the two cases have occurred in a period of 50-60 years where research has been carried out on sea eagles. – The Center Party shows itself to be a knowledge-denying party that is not concerned with nature management and the wild fauna in Norway, he believes. – We must introduce quota hunting for eagles, says group leader in the Nordland Center Party, Kim Haugan Schei. Photo: Thor-Wiggo Skille / Thor-Wiggo Skille – Naturens helvesvesen But the Center Party stands its ground. – Reindeer calves, lambs and eiders are a large part of the eagle’s diet, and if we are to manage to maintain sustainable agriculture, reindeer husbandry and look after seabirds, I believe that the population of eagles must be regulated, says Haugan Schei. He believes the challenge has increased in recent years. – When you go to Rovbase and check what the losses that have been documented in recent times are, it is mainly eagles that are the killer animals. For example, in Tverlandet outside Bodø, you can see 14-15 eagles sitting in the same place. There are clear signs that the eagle population is large, says Haugan Schei. In the past year, there have been 401 documented cases of golden eagles attacking grazing animals in Norway. – Nature regulates itself. No one can determine how large the tit, house sparrow or gull population may be either. They regulate themselves in step with the ecosystems, says Martin Eggen, and points out that sea eagles can often gather in flocks of 40-50 individuals. Martin Eggen is a nature conservation advisor at BirdLife Norway. Photo: PRIVAT Eggen thinks this is completely unproblematic. He compares the eagle to nature’s healthcare system. – Just like crows and seagulls, the eagle removes dead material from nature. It prevents the spread of infection and pollution, and actually works in the ecosystem all the time. – We need politicians who care about nature, and who do not spread false messages. It is harmful both for the goals we must achieve for nature, but also for simple trust, concludes Eggen. – Must have precise management – Quota hunting is, after all, ordinary hunting. The only large predator for which there is a quota hunt as of today is the lynx, says Frode Solbakken, head of the Nordland Nature Conservation Association. Frode Solbakken, leader of the Nordland Nature Conservation Association. Photo: Siv Bårdsen Solbakken acknowledges that the large eagle population is a challenge, but believes quota hunting is not the answer to the problem. – Reindeer herding in Southern Sami areas has problems with eagles, but we believe that this must first and foremost be solved by stopping the destruction of nature. It is important to have large enough areas so that you can have sustainable populations of predators. – It is often the case that when large losses of grazing animals occur, it is linked to individual individuals of, for example, wolverines. Then we believe that you must have a precise administration that takes out the individuals, says Solbakken. He believes that management should be handled by professionals, and points to the State Nature Inspectorate (SNO), with damage control as the solution. – It must be strengthened significantly, so that we can have a more professional management of nature. It gets a bit boring if you have to leave the most difficult challenges to ordinary hunters, adds Solbakken, who is an active hunter himself. – Eagles are not just eagles. The eagle that causes damage to reindeer husbandry is the golden eagle. The sea eagle is not a bird that takes a lot of grazing animals, it is a scavenger and eats fish. – Are you more positive about quota hunting for golden eagles than sea eagles? – We are not positive about quota hunting as a method to solve the problem at all, notes Solbakken, and reiterates that large enough areas for the predators is the important thing in the matter. – The Center Party should help us to implement the nature agreement in Norway. Then I think we are much better off, and avoid discussions about how predator populations should be managed at a minimum level. Then we get a robust nature, and a completely different discussion, concludes Solbakken.
