I also do a lot at home, but one misses mates at work. So says Rolf Martin Time (75), who was not particularly enthusiastic about the idea of a typical retired life. He enjoyed driving an excavator, which he has been doing for the past 60 years. – I’ve been doing this all my life. I have tried to relax, but one misses it. I think it’s best to stay a little invigorated. 25 pensioners as call workers Time is one of 25 pensioners who are still working part of the year at Stangeland Maskin. The pensioners are absolutely decisive for the company to get the job done. – People who retire are very good at being able to call, says Mette Idland, human resources manager at Stangeland Maskin. Photo: Thomas Ystrøm Idland says that the company could have chosen to bring in resources from a staffing agency. – But they don’t know us, the project or the machines, says Idland, who therefore thinks the Stangeland pensioners are a better solution. She says that excavator driver Time can drive as long as he wants. The company has not set an upper limit. – But he must be able to keep the same certificate and do a good job, says Idland. One in five over 70 in 2050 Regional director Tone Grindland in NHO Rogaland sees great advantages in more older people continuing to work. Older workers are often secure in their jobs, and have knowledge and experience that is important to share, she points out. – The match between a young person and an older person is very valuable, says Grindland. But several older people, like the excavator driver Time, have the desire and capacity to work. – I probably won’t last another 60 years, but I’ll take five years at a time, says Time. The 75-year-old knows several Jamaldra who would like to return to working life. – I have spoken to many people who miss having something to do. Because there is not much to do when you are in a house or flat, he says. Rolf Martin Time (75) tried his hand for a short period as a full-time pensioner. He didn’t think it was anything special. Photo: Thomas Ystrøm Director of the Center for Senior Policy, Kari Østerud. Photo: Center for senior policy Director of the Center for senior policy, Kari Østerud, believes that it is increasingly important that older people are in the workforce. – The retirement age has increased, but he should also continue to do so. If we are to be able to finance the welfare society in the future, working seniors are part of the solution. She points to a number of factors that influence how long we work (see fact box below), including culture, finances and health. What factors affect how long I work? Director of the Center for senior policy, Kari Østerud, points to three main factors that influence how long we work: 1. Pension schemes and retirement cultures. – The pension reform has undoubtedly contributed to increased employment for some groups. A retirement culture where, for example, it is expected that you retire early or extra favorable senior retirement packages can, on the other hand, contribute to lowering the retirement age. 2. Individual factors. – The health situation, personal preferences and family relationships have a lot to say about the retirement age. Disability is still the most important reason for early retirement, although the tendency is decreasing. It is the case that the non-driving rate has decreased for those over 55. Today’s 70-year-olds have better health and higher education than the 70-year-olds of previous generations. This has undoubtedly contributed to more people working longer today. 3. Relationships related to the workplace. – How you feel at work is probably the deciding factor for many people. Each individual workplace can do much more to keep people in work for longer. It is well documented that hiring and personnel policy influence retirement behavior in both positive and negative ways. – We need a change of attitude NHO-Grindland says that many managers state that they are satisfied with their own seniors. At the same time, they refuse to employ people in their 60s. – We have to change the way we think about this. How we practice and how we facilitate. Employees must think that it is interesting to work a little longer. She highlights an NHO survey from 2021, where very few companies included “age” as part of the work around diversity. – We see that age discrimination is common in working life in Norway, says Grindland and continues: – I think we need a change in attitude, and it is important to be aware of the resource we find in older workers. Have you caught up with Norway’s coolest crane operator? In 2020, we visited Torun Berg, who was then 63 years old, at work in Stavanger: Torun Berg is 63 years old and has been driving a crane since the 80s. Hi!
