The ship is towing a barge with 200 tons of emergency aid in the direction of the Gaza Strip. It is unknown how long the journey will take. On board there is rice, flour, beans, lentils and canned goods to be transported to the Gaza Strip. The fleet was loaded with emergency supplies at the weekend, after being inspected by Israeli officials. Photo: Yiannis Kourtoglou / Reuters The plan is for the emergency aid to be driven north, according to World Central Kitchen, which is responsible for the supplies. The whole thing is a trial run to check how the newly created sea corridor works. The corridor is a collaborative project between Great Britain, Cyprus, the EU, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Defense Minister in Israel, Yoav Gallant, told the Times of Israel that the supplies had been inspected by Israeli personnel in Cyprus before the ship left for Gaza, according to the Times of Israel. According to the UN, every fourth resident of the Gaza Strip is on the brink of starvation, i.e. death by starvation and dehydration. Photo: AFP – The solution is right in front of our noses Program manager of the Red Cross, Håkon Jacob Røthing, sees the sea route as a positive contribution, but points out that there are trucks on the Egyptian side, and on the Jordanian side, that want to drive via Israel to Gaza, but which stands firm. Røthing believes that the best thing would have been to make arrangements for the lorries to pass. Why is there not enough emergency aid to Gaza? The World Food Program has stopped deliveries to northern Gaza, because the ground fighting there makes it too difficult. The UN believes that the responsibility for ensuring safe traffic lies with Israel. Desperate starving Palestinians have gathered around the trucks that have entered, and chaos has ensued. Israel therefore believes it is too dangerous to drive in. All emergency aid must be inspected by Israel. These checks are particularly time-consuming and cumbersome. Emergency aid has also been physically blocked by Israeli protesters. The barge attached to “Open Arms” holds 200 tonnes of emergency aid. According to Røthing, this would feed 10 percent of the Gaza Strip for one day, if this were just food. He believes that driving in food is both cheaper, more accessible and easier to organise. – The solution is right in front of our noses. It is to open vegans that go straight into Gaza. – With 200 trucks a day, everyone in the Gaza Strip will get enough food. Hundreds of trucks are stuck at the Egyptian border. The ticket is from 1 February. Photo: Mohamed Abd El Ghany / Reuters The US sends warships The “Open Arms” operation is taking place in parallel with the US planning to build a breakwater and a quay outside Gaza, which can receive emergency aid from Cyprus. That was announced by President Joe Biden in his annual State of the Union address last week. The American warship “General Frank S. Besson” headed for the Gaza Strip on Sunday. The USA is one of the countries that has sent emergency aid from the air. But several of the supplies have ended up in the sea, and it is difficult to control who gets what by this method. Photo: ALINE MANOUKIAN / AFP According to the Pentagon, the new port will be ready within two months, and will require 1,000 soldiers. The Israeli defense minister believes that this will help ensure that emergency aid goes to civilians and not to Hamas. Little food in Getting food, medicines and water in to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip is difficult. Since Hamas won the elections in 2006, the Gaza Strip has been affected by an Israeli and Egyptian blockade, including the coast. The border with Israel and Egypt is surrounded by a six meter high barbed wire fence made of steel and iron. It is monitored with hundreds of cameras and sensors. The coast is guarded by the Israeli Navy. Israel has decided that the Palestinians will be allowed to fish up to 15 nautical miles from the coast, i.e. about 28 km. This is the first time emergency aid has been delivered to the coast, if everything goes according to plan. Chaos ensues when trucks enter the Gaza Strip. People are hungry and desperate for food. Photo: Kosay Al Nemer / Reuters The US provides weapons and emergency aid At the same time that the US is now planning to arrange for emergency aid to enter the Gaza Strip via the sea route, the US is also Israel’s most important ally. The US accounts for over 60 percent of arms imports to Israel, reports the Swedish research institute Sipri. The Washington Post reported at the beginning of March that the US must have secretly delivered thousands of weapons to Israel after the war against Hamas broke out in October. According to secret documents, it will be about both bombs, ammunition and handguns.

ttn-69

The Spanish ship “Open Arms” took off from the port in Cyprus on Tuesday morning.
