– The fraud attempts are becoming increasingly cunning and take on an appearance that is becoming very credible, says director of the security staff at the Swedish Tax Agency, Ragna Fossen. The tax reporting period is high season for fraudulent senders of e-mails and text messages, who apparently pretend to be from the Tax Agency. – This means that people have to be extra vigilant when messages apparently come from, for example, us at the Tax Agency with links or logins, says Fossen to news. This week the Swedish Tax Agency will begin sending out around 5 million tax notices. And fraud attempts tend to increase during this particular period. – There is an increasing number of phishing attempts in Norway and globally, but fortunately the level of awareness, skepticism and competence in the general population has improved. Nevertheless, the fraudsters also change their tactics and many are still tricked into clicking on links, says Fossen. Youngest most at risk During Wednesday, several people received fraud reports from the Swedish Tax Agency. It shows that 39 per cent of respondents aged 18\u201334 have been defrauded, while only 19 per cent of those aged over 55 have been defrauded. – However, we encourage everyone to watch out for fraud, says Fossen. The Swedish Tax Agency’s advice on what you can do to prevent being cheated: Look carefully at e-mails and text messages you receive. Make a critical assessment of the e-mail\/SMS and check the sender, and think about whether this could be correct. Healthy skepticism is never wrong. Compare the sender address with previous real emails\/SMS. Look especially for fake sender addresses, bad language and spelling mistakes. The criminals are getting better at imitating logos, colors and language. Pay particular attention if you are asked to enter sensitive information such as account numbers or security codes in an e-mail\/SMS. Do not open attachments from strangers, do not click on links indiscriminately, rather enter the internet address in the browser yourself. Especially on mobile, it can be tempting to click on a link on the fly, don’t do it.
