Braathen has called a press conference in Salzburg on Thursday, where it is expected that he will announce the comeback. It is a choice that the Norwegian alpinists have naturally taken with them. When asked if his best friend Atle Lie McGrath thinks it might be appropriate for Braathen, in the absence of other Brazilian teammates, to train with the Norwegian team, McGrath quickly replies: – No. Never again. – It was the worst He draws parallels to Henrik Kristoffersen who also runs his own scheme and who, like Braathen, is sponsored by Red Bull. – The relationship with Henrik has become much better now than when it was at its most painful in the 2018\/19 season, but we still never train together with Henrik, even though he is from the same nation. This is how it is. You don’t get it in bags and sacks, says McGrath. – The great thing about our team is that we have a crazy drive at training. We are the best buddies on tour. That’s what Attacking Vikings is all about. When you opt out, you can no longer be a part of it. – What hurts is that he has opted out, not necessarily the Norwegian association, but the Norwegian team and the Attacking Vikings culture. He opted out of it when he decided to take a break. That’s what I’m going to call it. He hasn’t quit, he’s taken a break. He chose it away. That was the worst part of it, says McGrath. Photo: Reuters Former teammate Timon Haugan is not shocked by the choice that has been made, but competing for a small alpine nation like Brazil can present challenges. – I think he is a guy who likes to be in a group so it may very well be a challenge for him eventually, but it is no longer our responsibility. He himself has made the choice to fend for himself, so then he gets to fend for himself too, says Haugan. Took to tears this autumn: – Great contrast McGrath and Braathen broke through more or less at the same time and have followed each other closely in recent years. – I think that the contrast between sitting and having to talk about Lucas giving up in S\u00f6lden this autumn, versus the fact that he is coming back, is very big. I was so sad last fall. I thought it was incredibly shitty. Crazy and I cried a lot, says McGrath. The alpinist almost confirms his return to Braathen in the interview. – The cat is out of the bag, he says with a smile. – I am very happy that he is back and it is good for the sport. He is super colorful and obviously a very good friend. I get to see him a lot more now, and it’s really cool, even though he’s racing for another nation, he continues. Photo: AFP Dispute with the Ski Association Last autumn, Lucas Braathen told Braathen that he had lost the joy of skiing and that he had lost his own freedom. The background was a conflict with the Norwegian Ski Association. – I’m done, said a tearful Lucas Braathen at the time. Now he will once again try to improve his alpine form for the coming seasons. The Norwegian Skiing Association has chosen not to comment on the Braathen case before Thursday’s announced press conference at Red Bull in Salzburg. Former teammate Alexander Aamodt Kilde wishes he had Braathen as a teammate again, but understands the choice. – I have somewhat mixed feelings about that, and would like him to come back to us, but it is a sign that something needs to be done. That has not happened, he says and adds: – Lucas is an incredibly good friend who I have missed being around. That he is doing well as a person is the most important thing to me. For me, he will still be Lucas from Norway, says Aamodt Kilde.
