Then she continued: – You can do Ski Classics when you go Ski Classics. This is the World Cup, so you can go shorter. The 32-year-old, with 111 podium places in the World Cup, has just finished eighth in the classic 20-kilometer race. Now she is talking about what will happen next Saturday. HISTORICAL: Ragnhild Haga sobbed with joy after the five-mile victory in Kollen. Photo: Terje Bendiksby / NTB The women will walk five miles in Holmenkollen for the second time in history. Ragnhild Haga made history when she won the very first one last year. Don’t want it In a year’s time, practice for the women’s championship program will take place for the first time during the WC in Trondheim. It seems that Therese Johaug is so exciting that she is working towards a possible comeback, precisely to assert herself in that race. But not everyone is equally excited. – I don’t think anything of that, says Heidi Weng. – You don’t really want five miles in Kollen? – No. – Not in the WC either? – No. She is far from the only one in the interview zone in Lahti who thinks so. – This is something that was decided a couple of years ago, but I myself think it could still be three miles, as it has been for quite some time before. I have also heard that others think so, but I don’t know what will happen in the future, she says. – Three miles is far enough While the ski jumpers have been fighting for years to be allowed to jump big hills, there has not been any similar battle among the best cross-country skiers in the world to be allowed to go five miles. In a survey in 2018, only 8.1 percent of the female World Cup runners said they wanted to go the same distances as the men. Nevertheless, the International Ski Federation (FIS) decided in 2022 that women and men should go the same distances – and that one of these distances should be 50 km. AGREE WITH WENG: Mathilde Myhrvold believes that only a few of the women in the World Cup want to walk five miles. Photo: Kalle Parkkien / BILDBYRÅN – It’s actually a bit strange. It may be that a few are in favor of it, but many I have spoken to are not, says Myhrvold, who believes that FIS should reconsider the matter. – Maybe it can be taken up, if something can be done about it in the future. Girls are able to walk five miles, but then the differences may be even greater. Three miles is tough enough, she says. – Three miles is far enough, and it will be almost twice as far to walk five miles, adds Swedish Jonna Sundling. She has long been one of the best sprinters in the world, but this season has also taken her first distance victory. But she has never walked five miles, nor is she sure when the first one will come. Fears low participation Sundling has not decided whether she will start in Holmenkollen, and she is not the only one in the thinking box. Last year, there were only 32 who took part in the five-mile race in Holmenkollen, including Norway’s national quota. This meant that 12 of the 32 starters were Norwegian. – For me, there probably won’t be a start there, says Swedish Maja Dahlqvist about the race next weekend. READY FOR FIVE MILES: Frida Karlsson is looking forward to walking her first five miles in Kollen. Photo: Dustin Satloff / BILDBYRÅN She is not opposed to five miles for women, but is concerned that the long distance leads to low participation. – If there are 30 runners starting, I think maybe… I think there will be many who want to go and many on the starting line, she says. Among the “few” Mathilde Myhrvold talks about, who actually want five thousand, is Frida Karlsson. – I have never walked five miles, so I think it will be cool to try, says the Swedish endurance runner to news. – Sees no way back Despite her skepticism, Heidi Weng will also start. – I’m usually happy with most of the skiing, so I go what I can, she says. TOO LATE TO TURN AROUND: Race director Michael Lamplot believes the women’s five-mile is here to stay. Photo: Johanne Wallen / BILDBYRÅN And the signal from FIS is that the five-mile for women is here to stay. – Equal distances were adopted two years ago, and 50 kilometers is one of these distances. It has been confirmed by the FIS Council (FIS board) and by the IOC (International Olympic Committee), so I see no way back, says race director Michael Lamplot to news. He nevertheless shares the concern about low participation – among both sexes. – Having five miles two weekends in a row, i.e. in Holmenkollen the weekend after the championship, we see that has a negative effect on participation. That is not the case this year, so it will be exciting to see how many people took part, says Lamplot. He states that, as of now, 49 women and 74 men have registered for the five miles in Holmenkollen this year, but that does not mean that everyone actually starts.

ttn-69

– Walking race, says Heidi Weng, and let it hang in the air.
