Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news The oil service company has over a hundred apprentices at the shipyard at any given time. – The grade is an indication of the attitude of the student applying for an apprenticeship. That you can show consideration, have respect for others and come when you have to, says Tvergrov. This school year, the Norwegian Directorate of Education has launched a three-year experiment. Instead of the students getting a grade for order and behavior on the certificate, the teachers must follow up with conversations. Facts about the grading trial: Before new curricula were introduced in 2020, local trials were carried out in Rogaland and Møre og Romsdal, with positive experiences. Since the consultation responses were divided in their views on the provision, Udir decided to carry out a national trial in order to obtain a better knowledge base. . Through the experiment, Udir wants to obtain knowledge about whether assessment in order and behavior without a grade fulfills this purpose in a better way than the current system with a grade. Even if the schools remove the grade in the experiment, the students must still be assessed in both order and behaviour. The schools are responsible for further developing an assessment practice without a grade during the experimental period, and exploring other methods of giving feedback to the students, which replace the grade. The Nordic Institute for Studies of Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU) will evaluate the experiment. Udir will then assess whether there is reason to look at this provision again. The students who take part in the experiment will receive a certificate in which there will be a dotted line where the grade usually appears, and where a note must be entered describing that the student is taking part in an extension without a grade. Photo: Gisle Jørgensen / news – I think it is unfortunate that the character disappears for those who will need it. Then it may be that you are excluded from applying for a job in some places, says sheet metal worker apprentice at Aibel, Ståle Christiansen. Are you wondering whether you need to think about a pension when you are a student or apprentice? Check this case. Training companies react The experiment applies to all education programmes, but it is particularly in the vocational subjects that the reactions have come. Without the grade, apprenticeship companies lose one of the tools they have when choosing apprentices. The information they can get from the schools is, among other things, limited by the duty of confidentiality. – I have spoken to twelve training offices for various industries, and the answer is quite unison. The vast majority agree that this attempt is not a good idea, says Ove Johan Aklestad, general manager at the Training Office for industrial subjects in Rogaland, OFIR. Photo: Anett Johansen Espeland / news OFIR is responsible for contact with 900 apprentices at 390 industrial companies. – Many companies say that the first thing they look for is order, behavior and absence on the competence certificate of potential apprentices. If they don’t keep order, it affects both the delivery and health, environment and safety, says Aklestad. – Wrong medicine The timing could not have been worse, says the Progress Party. – We will strongly warn against this project. It is completely the wrong medicine when we see a school with high dropout rates, increased bullying and violence. Then we don’t need less discipline, says Frp’s school policy spokesperson at the Storting, Himanshu Gulati. Photo: Bjørn Inge Bergestuen / Frp What he is talking about are the problems of the past year, with increasing youth violence, and more bullying, unrest and noise, also in schools. – If you think that not making demands on order and behavior prepares students for life, then you are completely wrong, says Gulati. Political leadership in the Ministry of Education defends the attempt. State Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Synnøve Mjeldheim Skaar (Ap). Photo: Kristine Urke Johansen / news – We will take problems with violence and unrest in schools very seriously, but I don’t think it is this experiment with how you keep grades on the diploma that will pay off, says State Secretary Synnøve Mjeldheim Skaar (Ap). – But more apprenticeship companies are skeptical? – It is an important feedback. Order and behavior are assessed, and the apprenticeship companies need this information. Then you have to find out how they can get it with this attempt.
