(External link). Under these contracts, Equinor will receive ten new helicopters of the Bell 525 type and five of the AW189 type. The helicopter types are in addition to the current Sikorsky S-92. It was this helicopter model that crashed outside Sotra on Wednesday evening. – Going from one to three helicopter models on the NCS will provide greater flexibility and regularity, says Kjetil Hove, executive director for the NCS. The Sikorsky S-92 has Photo: Leon Andersen / Private Coming in 2025 The first two helicopters will be delivered from Leonardo in the first quarter of 2025. In 2026, Leonardo will deliver three, and Bell four helicopters. The other six helicopters from Bell are to be delivered in the period 2027-2030. – It is positive that Equinor is making agreements for 15 new helicopters with two new suppliers, but it is coming a little late, says manager of Safe, Raymond Midtgård. He does not believe that the accident is the reason why they entered into the agreements. – I know Equinor was in the USA last week, and they have been working on acquiring new helicopter types for some time. Midtgård believes it is positive that there will be more helicopter types on the Norwegian continental shelf. Today, only the Sikorsky S-92 is used. The Super Puma is also approved, but it is no longer used after the Turøy accident. – The good thing when you have several types is that when there is a fault or suspected fault with one type of helicopter, there are still two other types that can be used, he says. In total, there are 46 helicopters flying on the Norwegian continental shelf. Equinor has 24 of these. – Dependent on safe and good helicopter transport – All the associations in Equinor, including the security service, have been well involved in the process and are positive that the company has taken this initiative, says Hove. The trade unions and the Norwegian Defense Service jointly believe that these helicopters have the quality and characteristics that are desired on the shelf. – We depend on safe and good helicopter transport to maintain a high level of activity on the Norwegian shelf for a long time to come. The new models have technological improvements when it comes to pilot support systems, passenger comfort and noise reduction, says Ørjan Kvelvane, Director of Development and Production Norway. Says it is wise to have more than one type As recently as yesterday, the director of aviation in the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board, Kåre Halvorsen, pointed to weaknesses in that Norway only has one type of helicopter that is used to transport passengers. – It is clear that it is a vulnerable situation. If it turns out that it is a technical fault with the helicopter that has caused the accident, there could be greater consequences for regularity offshore.
