Diesel, electricity, interest, fertiliser: Everything is getting more and more expensive for Norwegian farmers. Farmer and local team leader for Nordre Mel\u00f8y and S\u00f8ndre Gildesk\u00e5l Farmers’ Association, Odd Arne Stormo, reacts to the fact that the fertilizer producer Yara earned as much in the first quarter of this year as the entire agricultural settlement 2022. – I think Yara has taken it reasonably well, says Stormo. Much more expensive. – Fertilizer accounts for the biggest price increase. Something we use significant amounts of, says Odd Arne Stormo. The price has increased by 143% in one year: In 2021, he paid NOK 3.70 per kilogram of fertiliser. In 2022, he pays NOK 9 per kilogram of fertilizer (if Stormo were to buy it today). He uses 50 tonnes of fertilizer a year. In other words: Fertilizing the land costs Stormo NOK 450,000 a year instead of NOK 185,000. In 2020, 50 tonnes of artificial fertilizer cost approximately NOK 50,000. Still not marking the agricultural settlement correctly The State owns just under 43 per cent of the shares in Yara. The good result was shown, among other things, in this year’s agricultural settlement, which was a historically good settlement for the farmers. But they don’t notice much about it yet, first explains deputy chairman of the Norwegian Farmers’ Association, Egil Christopher Hoen: – It is primarily in the autumn, when farmers receive an extra payment in September, that the good settlement is felt. Nordal points out that Yara is a global company, and that the return is a result of increased global prices and strong results from the operation outside Europe. She writes that they have a great understanding that it is demanding to be a farmer today. But: – The price of fertilizer is determined in a global market related to supply and demand. – The most important thing Yara can do is to use our global system to produce fertilizer to ensure that the farmer can continue the work of growing enough food – in Norway, in Ukraine and throughout the world.
