For a long time she had a fear of the mass murder, but that has changed. – I am no longer afraid of being defined by 22 July, I am more afraid of the extreme becoming everyday. The marking is both nice and painful, but it is a day she often dreads. Summer doesn’t really start for Hoem until it has passed. – I can’t take a complete break mentally until those days are over. I will breathe a little easier in August. THE RIGHT WORDS: Astrid Hoem and colleagues in AUF discuss the speech she will give on Utøya at the eleventh anniversary celebration on 22 July. It is not always easy to find the right words. Photo: Håkon Benjaminsen / news – Never must forget She thinks it is like this for many. Both those who were affected by the attack on the Al-Noor Mosque and the attack during pride this year. She receives support from Grete Dyb, research leader at the National Knowledge Center on Violence and Traumatic Stress. – The date and day can be a strong reminder, they will always be there. 11 years after eight people were killed in the government quarter, and 69 people were killed on Utøya, stands as a day that will always mark one of the darkest days in modern Norwegian history. – The survivors and relatives are concerned that we must never forget, if we put it behind us, we will learn nothing, says Dyb. MARKERS: In the days after the terrorist attack on 22 July, thousands gathered in processions in several cities in Norway. Astrid Hoem believes it is important to continue to use 22 July to talk out loud about what happened. Photo: Erlend Aas The debate must continue Although Hoem thinks it’s nice to remember those she lost, she is keen to use 22 July as the day to debate. And 25 June 2022 and 10 August 2019 have become important dates for Hoem. The shooting in Oslo, and the attack on the Al-Noor mosque, have burned into her memories. – We have to use those days to talk out loud about how to prevent it from happening again. We know all too well that hate has taken life, and that hate can kill again. We all have a responsibility to stand up to the attitudes that can lead to the actions. REMEMBER: It is eleven years since the AUF youth camp on Utøya was hit by a terrorist attack. Photo: Håkon Benjaminsen / news Other things are happening around the world that worry Hoem. Among other things, abortion rights in the USA, gay-free zones in Poland, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. All of these are examples of how society around the world is becoming more extreme, according to Hoem. During the summer, she has been both angry, scared and despairing. – We who are concerned with freedom, security, equality and justice, we must fight harder for these values. It is a fight that we need everyone to take part in. The terrorist attacks on 22 July 2011 On 22 July 2011, Norway was hit by two terrorist attacks. In total, 77 people were killed and several hundred seriously injured. The first terrorist attack was carried out at 15.25 when a car bomb detonated in the Government Quarter in central Oslo. The explosion killed eight people, injured many and caused extensive damage. The second terrorist attack took place on Utøya in Tyrifjorden in Hole municipality later the same day. Here AUF, the Labor Party’s youth organisation, organized its annual summer camp. 69 people lost their lives and many were seriously injured. On 24 August 2012, after an extensive trial, the perpetrator was sentenced to the law’s most severe sentence: 21 years in prison. It is people themselves who write their own history, she says. She wants everyone to take ownership of the debate. – We can create hope through all of us joining in and using our voices in the fight against hate. We must hold accountable those who feed on hatred and conspiracy theories, especially against groups that are particularly vulnerable such as queer people and Muslims. Photo: Heiko Junge / NTB Important to increase the level of knowledge Since 2011, the emergence of digital platforms for the spread of propaganda and extreme ideology has been something that PST is following closely. Much of the work they do is about preventing radicalisation. Siv Sørensen, strategic analyst at PST, says that it must start as early as possible. – Prevention is a social responsibility we all share, she says. She points out that you must notify the police or PST if you have concerns, there should be a low threshold for talking about your concerns. Sørensen believes it is important to bring out the kind of argument that extremists use. To increase knowledge about the rhetoric used by extreme groups and individuals. – This with dehumanisation, portraying someone as less valuable, and using the argument of an existential threat to be able to use violence. We need to address it when it happens. We have to make it clear that it is not okay. KJEMPER: – We who are concerned with freedom, security, equality and justice, we must fight harder for these values, says Hoem. Photo: n649416 / n649416 The time afterwards Astrid Hoem has led the Workers’ youth group since 2020. Earlier this year she announced that she is running for re-election for the position. It will be decided at the national meeting in October. But one day she will be too old, one day there will be no Utøya survivors left in the youth party. – I think it’s a bit nice, because I know that when that day comes, it will still be part of AUF’s history. New members come in. The youngest were only four years old when the massacre happened.
