Dan Nilsen is head of the emergency room for Ukrainian refugees in the North Cape. He is concerned about the lack of daycare facilities for the youngest children. – There is definitely a need for the kids to get a place in the kindergarten. At least for the oldest kids under school age who lack an offer. They have neither school nor other sports facilities. – Thus, they stay here with their parents around the clock. The head of the refugee reception center in the North Cape, Dan Nilsen, despairs that the Ukrainian children will not get a place in the kindergarten. Photo: Trond Odin Myhre Johansen \/ news He says that this also affects the parents. – The integration will be much slower as the parents are stuck with the children all the time and thus do not get to work. Several municipalities are struggling in the start-up phase The reception manager believes that the lack of a kindergarten place is not unique to the children who have come to the North Cape. – There are receptions all over the country. I would like to think that other municipalities are struggling immediately, and are not able or willing to offer a daycare place to children who live in a reception center. This is confirmed by Knut Henrik Berntsen, Head of Capacity and Logistics at the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. He writes in an e-mail to news that it is important to have an offer in place quickly to give children and young people stability in a difficult and demanding life situation. Knut Berntsen, head of capacity and logistics at the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, says that several municipalities are struggling to find kindergarten places for the refugees. Photo: Jorunn Hatling \/ news – The UDI is aware that some host municipalities, especially early in the situation with the arrival of many refugees from Ukraine, had challenges in strengthening the daycare offer in the municipality. Furthermore, he writes that the UDI also has experience that small and large municipalities have quickly managed to provide a full-fledged kindergarten and activity offer for the refugees. Would like to see more goodwill Reception manager Nilsen says that the municipalities receive support from the state for the refugees they receive, and that this money will go to ensure them offers such as kindergarten and school places. He believes there are several reasons why the municipality has not been able to secure the offer. – What is missing across the board now are simply hands to take care of the job, but at the same time I should have seen a little more goodwill from Nordkapp municipality to try to make this happen at all. At the refugee reception center in the North Cape, the children do not have an offer of a kindergarten place. Photo: Thomas Fredrik Kristensen \/ news Lack of educators Acting mayor of Nordkapp, Tor H. Mikkola (Sp), says that the municipality does not have the opportunity to offer kindergarten space. – They are not entitled to daycare as long as they are at a refugee reception center. The municipality does not have enough professionally trained kindergarten educators to be able to take more children into the kindergartens. Thus, they have to prioritize the children who are or will be living in the municipality. – If we now received the eight children, we would have to open new departments, and it would have cost the municipality dearly. Acting mayor of Nordkapp, Tor Mikkola says that the municipality can not afford to have the Ukrainian children in kindergarten. Photo: Trond Odin Myhre Johansen \/ news The municipality has calculated that they have to pay an amount of between four and five million kroner to be able to provide space for the children in the refugee reception center. – We do not have the finances and capacity for that, says Mikkola. Calls for a solution Ann Beate L\u00f8vland and Stine-Mari Strifeldt from the North Cape Labor Party have committed themselves to integrating the youngest inhabitants of the municipality. – We will not drop this case and we will ensure that these children get a good enough offer. The politicians say that the Storting has submitted a request to the municipality that it should be possible to offer kindergarten places to children in refugee reception centers in an emergency situation. Nordkapp municipality has still not done this. Labor Party politicians Ann Beate L\u00f8vland and Stine-Mari Strifeldt have committed themselves to getting the children a place in kindergarten.
