In fact, it looked so uninviting that Provost in North Helgeland Olav Rune Ertzeid himself took up the painting business this spring. – I think it looked very unwelcome for those who were to come in confirmations and 17 May. So I painted some walls on the outside to make it look a little nice. But now the wooden church from 1882, which is a cultural monument worthy of protection, has received help from unexpected sources. Great donor joy Bjørg Stemland has herself been baptized and confirmed in the church, and she has long resented the lack of maintenance. Therefore, she has now opened her wallet and donated NOK 10 million for refurbishment. But why exactly that sum? GIVER JOY: Bjørg Stemland from Sandnessjøen got tired of seeing that the church in his hometown fell into disrepair. Then she opened her wallet and paid for the renovation. Photo: Marius Guttormsen / iSandnessjøen – I was sent an estimate that said that 10 million was needed to repair the damage that had occurred. – I am so lucky that I have received dividends from some shares, and that I can give a good part of it to a cause that will please myself and many others. Stemland owns just over 5 per cent of the shares in the family company Vigner Olaisen, which has a majority shareholding in the fish farming company Nova Sea in Lovund. – It’s starting to dawn on me that this is quite a lot of money, but I think it’s worth it. Facts about Sandnessjøen church A cruciform church in wood Was built in 1882 Has 380 seats according to the Church Building Database The church has conservation status with the National Heritage Board Designed by builder Markus Grenstad Is characterized by neo-Gothic and Swiss style struck by lightning, but later rebuilt Maintenance to be carried out: the church’s roof is repaired, exterior walls can be scraped and painted, windows can be repaired, rot damage can be repaired and the entrance and stairs can be secured. Inside, the church’s roofs and walls can be plastered and painted. The electrical system can be replaced The goal is to finish the renovation by the end of 2023. Will decorate the «bride» One and a half years ago, she donated more than 2 million kroner to a new mammography device at the hospital in Sandnessjøen. – I have given to other purposes before, but I have never felt that I have become any poorer by giving. If you have the opportunity to share and give to others, you will enjoy it yourself. DECLINE: This spring, Provost Olav Rune Ertzeid took action and painted several of the outer walls before confirmation and celebration of National Day. Photo: Sofie Grønnevik Eriksen Sandnessjøen church is popularly called Helgelandsbruden. It is a name that commits, says Stemland. – Listen to the name and look at the state of the day. It looks like a pretty sad bride. So now we are going to decorate the bride, she says in cash. The municipalities are responsible Although the various parishes in Norway own the buildings, it is the individual municipality that is responsible for construction, operation and maintenance. Mayor of Alstahaug Peter Talseth (Sp) says that it would take many years to refurbish the church to the desired condition if the money were to come through the municipality. MAYOR: Peter Talseth (Sp) is the mayor of Alstahaug municipality on the Helgeland coast. Photo: Ole-Christian Olsen – It is as with us as with other municipalities with a tight budget: It is demanding to do what we want with the church. We are responsible for more churches than just in Sandnessjøen, and if we were to give 10 million kroner, it would have to be over many years. – Do you think the municipalities are the right ones to be responsible for the renovation of church buildings in Norway? – The advantage is that we have knowledge and proximity to the buildings, so in that I think it makes sense. But I think there is too little money overall, so we would have liked to have seen larger allocations so that we could have put more money into the buildings we have maintenance for, including the churches. Backlog of 10–12 billion in Norway There are about 1635 church buildings in Norway. Every four years, the employers’ organization for church enterprises (KA) conducts surveys on how these are doing. Communications Director Trygve W. Jordheim says that the development over the last 20 years has been stable, but that the backlog of maintenance is large. – It is estimated at between 10-12 billion kroner, based on superficial surveys. But he emphasizes that one often sees that the deeper one investigates, the higher the bill. – So the number is probably a cautious estimate. Weter climate presents problems There are very few churches in Norway where the situation is critically bad, but that something must be done on the vast majority. But many of the churches are built in a different time, with a different climate. – The climate gets wetter and then it is all the more important that the shell is dense. We have quite a lot of focus on that. For even small maintenance, can lead to major consequences. DELAY: KA’s communications director, Trygve W. Jordheim, says the backlog of maintenance on Norwegian churches is large. Photo: Erlend Berge / Private – We have seen examples of gutters that have been in poor condition that have led to water in places where it should not have been. There have been bills of several hundred thousand kroner. A new gutter might have cost a couple of thousand kroner. Jordheim believes that it is smart for the municipalities themselves to be responsible for maintenance. – If this responsibility had been laid nationally, that the state budget went, we think it would have been more difficult to get funds to maintain and take care of the churches. On behalf of the government, the National Heritage Board is working on a major state conservation program for Norwegian churches. NOK 10 billion will be spent on the churches with the greatest national cultural heritage value in the period up to 2030. – So something is happening, and we are very happy about that, Jordheim concludes. DECLINED: Several of the entrances bear the mark of rot. This should now be fixed.
