– There is a wide range of measures here. That’s what Line Lund Fjellv\u00e6r says, who is head of the climate and environment department at the State Administrator in Tr\u00f8ndelag. State managers in several counties have been assigned to lead the work to improve the conditions for the wild reindeer in their areas. – These are difficult assessments, but strong measures are needed to save the Norwegian wild reindeer, says Fjellv\u00e6r. Project groups have been set up to stand behind the proposals for the action plan, which will be sent to the Norwegian Environment Agency on Friday. The project groups consist of affected municipalities, wild reindeer committees and wild reindeer committees. Among other things, the group has proposed putting the E6 and the railway in a tunnel at Dovrefjell. – It is clear that it is a very costly measure, and it will involve a longer planning process, says Fjellv\u00e6r. Closure of two roads in Sn\u00f8hetta (parts of Aursj\u00f8veien and Sandgrovbotnveien). Changes in stock management – new stock target. State planning regulations with a greater focus on wild reindeer. Measures against infection transmission at salt stone sites in Knutsh\u00f8. – The state administrator stands behind the project group’s thorough work. Local knowledge and knowledge of wild reindeer have been important in the work. In further processing, it will be important that the integrity of the action plans is preserved. But it is described as an effective measure. Removing musk from Dovrefjell is also one of the many proposals for the project group. But this proposal is proposed as a step 2, if measures proposed in step 1 do not have the desired effect. The biggest threats to the wild reindeer are the fragmentation of the areas they live in and the disease scrapie. Wild reindeer need large habitats and avoid human activity. The development of power plants, roads and cottage fields threatens the wild reindeer, and disrupts their natural migration routes. – In the past, wild reindeer moved over much larger areas, whereas now they stay within their areas, says Fjellv\u00e6r. Measures must therefore be initiated, the State Administrator believes. Will look at cabin plans again Measures have also been proposed for Rondane to improve the conditions for the wild reindeer. Restoration of central migration routes and measures to prevent further fragmentation. Screening of the calving and growing period. Shielding of areas that are currently relatively undisturbed. A “foot in the ground” for cabin construction around Rondane. Establishment of a monitoring system, a collaboration arena and a coordinating link for comprehensive management of the wild reindeer and its area. There are more than 25,000 cabins, bows and seats in Rondane and S\u00f8lnkletten. In addition, 35 km\u00b2 have been set aside for cabin construction in approved zoning and municipal plans. Something that corresponds to 10,000 new cabins. The State Administrator in the Interior believes that the municipalities must look at the plans for new cabins again, and that they cannot build as many as they have planned. A negative development The wild reindeer populations in Norway are the last viable populations of wild reindeer in Europe. In 2020, the government adopted a quality standard for wild reindeer, which provides measures for how good the condition of the wild reindeer areas should be. The quality standard is intended to be a management tool to improve living conditions for wild reindeer. Six of the ten national reindeer areas do not meet the government’s requirements for the good condition of a reindeer area. This is shown by the Norwegian Environment Agency’s traffic light model for wild reindeer. Six out of ten national wild reindeer areas were classified as poor quality (red). These were Knutsh\u00f8, Sn\u00f8hetta, Rondane, Nordfjella, Hardangervidda and Setesdal Ryfylke. Although many measures have been initiated for the wild reindeer in the last ten years, the development over a long period has nevertheless been negative. The government is therefore working on a notification to the Storting for wild reindeer. Among other things, the report will contain a new policy to improve the situation for wild reindeer in Norway, and will be presented in the first half of 2024. The closure of tourist cabins, a ban on kiting and the rerouting of trails are among the proposals to save the endangered wild reindeer on Hardangervidda. Removing the musk on Dovrefjell has also been a proposal that has come up.
