The noise comes after anti-Semitic content has been spread on the platform. Many believe Musk has displayed anti-Semitic attitudes. “You have told the actual truth,” Musk wrote to a user who, among other things, accused Jews of spreading hatred against whites. A report from the group Media Matters also shows how advertisements from large companies on X have ended up alongside anti-Semitic and Nazi content. Now the New York Times (NYT) has gained access to internal documents from X which will show the damage potential of the noise. The documents show that several large companies have withdrawn their advertisements from X, or are considering doing so, writes the newspaper. Warner Brothers, Paramount and Disney have already stopped advertising. Now, giants such as Airbnb, Coca-Cola and Microsoft may have done or considered doing the same. – They are struggling with Elon Musk being Elon Musk, says Ståle Lindblad, an expert on social media, about the situation X is in. 800 million The sales department in X should have prepared a report showing how much the company can lose if advertisers withdraw. They have concluded that X could lose 75 million dollars, or just over 800 million Norwegian kroner, according to the NYT. X claims that the figures in the report are either out of date, or part of an internal risk exercise, writes the NYT. Ståle Lindblad follows Elon Musk and X closely. He thinks he sees some patterns when it comes to Musk constantly getting into trouble because of posts in social media. Photo: Bjørn Atle Gildestad – Elon Musk writes tweets spontaneously, without using his head first, and it is constantly costing him money, says Lindblad to news. The advertisers and X themselves point to different things when they have to explain the ad flight. The X post The uproar took off in mid-November when X owner Elon Musk apparently endorsed an anti-Semitic statement on X. In response to another user who had accused Jews of hating white people, Musk wrote: “You have told the actual truth”. Ståle Lindblad believes Elon Musk struggled with impulse control when it comes to publishing on X. Photo: DADO RUVIC / Reuters Lindblad believes Musk struggles with impulse control when it comes to sending poorly thought-out X messages. – And now he has this fascination for what he calls freedom of expression. Then he goes on mines again and again. It’s about some strange obsession, Lindblad believes. – From saying edgy things? – Yes. He calls it freedom of speech, but that doesn’t apply when someone criticizes him. X owner Elon Musk says he only wants prosperity and the best for humanity. Photo: POOL / Reuters The White House has condemned what it calls Musk’s “disgusting promotion” of anti-Semitism. It is this post that many advertisers point to when they withdraw. – This week there have been hundreds of false media reports claiming that I am anti-Semitic, writes Musk in a post on X. – It couldn’t be further from the truth. I wish only the best for humanity and a prosperous and exciting future for everyone, writes Musk. Media Matters A few days after Musk’s post, Media Matters published a report. It displays ads from companies such as Apple and IBM next to anti-Semitic posts. Media Matters writes that X has “placed advertisements for major brands” next to “content that glorifies Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party”. Musk writes in several posts on X that Media Matters is “pure evil”, and has sued the group. Managing director Linda Yaccarino believes this report is to blame for the advertiser flight. CEO Linda Yaccarino blames Media Matters for the advertisers withdrawing from X. Photo: RICHARD DREW / AP X writes in the lawsuit that it believes Media Matters has deliberately manipulated the algorithms to make the ads appear next to the anti-Semitic content . On Monday this week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton opened an investigation into Media Matters. The aim is to uncover whether they committed fraud with the report. Thinks the algorithms work Lindblad, for his part, believes the report shows that X’s algorithms work as they should. – Nothing that X describes in the lawsuit is manipulation, beyond the fact that they have scrolled and refreshed until the combination appears. – But that’s not very common user behavior, is it? – No, it is not usual to only follow 30 accounts and refresh. The point is that it shows that the algorithm can place ads next to anti-Semitic posts. There is therefore no filter that prevents the algorithms from doing so, says Lindblad.

ttn-69

In recent weeks, there has been a storm around Elon Musk and his company X.
