Hundreds of children and young people have been in place this weekend in Hamar and Lillehammer to follow the Norwegian handball girls in the build-up to the WC on home ground. On Saturday, they got to see Norway win 31-21 over Iceland. But many have had to take the drawer home – without securing a picture together with their large passenger car. – We would like to give a lot back, but there is something about that total that we have to be careful about. It’s a shame it’s like that, but it’s important to us, says veteran Camilla Herrem. National team coach Thorir Hergeirsson and the Norwegian national team have introduced strict measures ahead of and during the WC. Least possible close contact with outsiders. – We do what is quite common in top sports when there are important competitions. You may not be in contact with all kinds of people that much right then, you try to limit your circle of friends. STRICT RULES: Captain Stine Bredal Oftedal in conversation with starlet Maja Furu Sæteren. Photo: Beate Oma Dahle / NTB The captain adds that a championship on home ground makes it extra challenging. – We just try to be generally very strict. Trying to isolate us as much as possible. We are in Norway, there is of course a lot of family around, there are many Norwegians who would like to get close, so we just have to try to keep our distance. Fear of “home ground nightmare” The last time Norway had a championship on home ground, during the European Championships in 2010, the Norwegian national team had a huge blow. – I remember it very well because we were about to lose the team out of the tournament, says Hergeirsson. At the start of the intermediate round, communicable disease ravaged the Norwegian squad and almost half the team was infected with the dreaded Norovirus. ILLNESS: The national team coach recalls that half the team was ill the last time Norway played a championship at home. Photo: Aleksandr Nedbaev / news – As our good doctor Ola Sand would say; then people have to eat poo, and that’s not good, notes the national team manager. Norway suffered an embarrassing 19-24 loss to Sweden in the first game in the intermediate round, after several of the biggest stars were ruled out of action. – Thorir probably also remembers well that we had half a team watching there in 2010, recalls Camilla Herrem and laughs. Norway, on the other hand, got their revenge, when they just beat Sweden in the final 25–20 and took their fourth straight EC victory. Asking for understanding With this in mind and the flu and other diseases that are ravaging freely, both the national team coach and the players hope that the fans will understand that the team must take their precautions during this year’s championship at home. EXPERIENCE: Camilla Herrem remembers well the EC on home soil, where half the team was knocked out by a stomach virus. Photo: Beate Oma Dahle / NTB – The last thing you want is to miss many matches because you have fallen ill, because you have made a mistake here and there and not taken all the precautions you should, says Herrem, who has almost 300 international matches with the flag on the chest. – Then we try to give back what we can and, because I understand that it is important that we give back to those who come and watch, she adds. The national team coach underlines that, despite everything that happens on the pitch, it is the most important thing, and does not fear that the fans will be too disappointed that close contact with the stars will be limited. – Life consists of joys and disappointments and ups and downs. I like to believe that the ups with the handball girls are more than the downs, so I think we will be forgiven and understood for that, replies the 59-year-old. FEAR: The Norwegian coaching staff’s biggest fear is that disease will spread in the Norwegian squad. Photo: Beate Oma Dahle / NTB But even if the rules are strict, the players also promise that the fans will get some. The players will still be handing out pre-signed autograph cards. If the distance is large enough, the players can also line up in the picture. – Then we should be able to give back to them without it being too much of a risk, but the most important thing is just to be a bit sensible about it, underlines Henny Reistad, who is supported by the captain; – I think that getting a championship on home soil and seeing us in action – isn’t that the main attraction?

ttn-69

– Of course we wish we could take more “selfies” and such, but we are here to play and win as much as possible, says Stine Bredal Oftedal, captain of the Norwegian national handball team.
