Every day he drives to the shop he runs in the center of Kherson. Every day he sees his hometown being a little more destroyed. ATTACK: Smoke rises during an attack on Kherson. Photo: Håvard Greger Hagen / news Life is becoming increasingly dangerous for the residents of Kherson. Kherson is located on the Dnipro River. On the other side are the Russian forces. In recent weeks, the attacks have become more intense. FRONTLINE: Kherson is located on the west side of the Dnipro River. The other side is occupied by the Russians. Photo: HANDOUT / AFP For Igor, everyday life is about survival, but now he has another worry. He is afraid that in the future the Ukrainians will face the war against Russia more alone. The reason is the new war between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East. – The focus has shifted. We know that a large part of the aid comes from the United States. Israel is one of the most important partners of the United States. We can get less money for weapons. The less we get, the more of our soldiers will be killed. URIX: Russian bombs are still falling on Ukraine, but the suffering comes in the shadow of the atrocities in Gaza. What happens in Ukraine when attention fades? Arrested and beaten up For Igor, the war must be won. He has experienced firsthand what it means to live under Russian occupation. When the Russians took control of Kherson in the days following the invasion on February 24 last year, Igor did not find himself in the new regime. PROTEST: People in Kherson asked Russian soldiers to go home during a demonstration in March 2022. It was during such a demonstration that Igor was arrested. Photo: HANDOUT / Reuters He organized a demonstration. It ended with him being beaten up and arrested, he says. He says he knocked out four teeth and broke his nose. Igor says that he was locked up for two weeks, that he was beaten up and threatened. Earlier this year, at least 20 torture chambers were discovered in Kherson county. According to investigators, they were financed and planned by the Russian authorities, wrote Reuters. Abducted mayor Nothing is normal in Kherson In a basement in a secret location, the city administration resides. If the location becomes known, the building can quickly become a bomb target. But the elected mayor is no longer in office. He was abducted by Russian soldiers in June last year. Today he will be in captivity somewhere in Russia. Deputy mayor Anton Jefanov says they don’t know how he is doing. – The Russians are not telling us anything. We receive no information. Today we do not know if he is alive or not. DANGEROUS: Kherson is today one of the most dangerous places in Ukraine. – We are attacked daily by Russian artillery, tanks and missiles, says deputy mayor Anton Jefanov. Photo: Håvard Greger Hagen / news He, too, is concerned that the war in the Middle East will extend beyond Ukraine. – We are dependent on both military and financial support from abroad. Without this help, Ukraine will not be able to stop the war. On the offensive at Dnipro One year ago, people cheered in Kherson. The Ukrainians had managed to push the Russians out of the city after an eight-month occupation. Since then, 200 people have been killed in Russian attacks on the city. The liberation of Kherson was the last great victory of Ukraine. Since then, the front line has been more or less quiet, despite the Ukrainians’ five-month long offensive. CELEBRATED: Last November, people in Kherson celebrated that Ukrainian forces had pushed the Russians out of the city. An eight-month occupation was over. Photo: Yevhenii Zavhorodnii / AP In October, Ukrainian soldiers crossed the Dnipro river, just north of Kherson. The Ukrainians have gained a foothold in several places on the east side of the river, confirmed both Russia and Ukraine. – One of the main goals of this work is to push the enemy as far as possible away from the right bank to protect the Ukrainian civilian population, especially in Kherson, from constant Russian shelling, said spokesman Andriy Kovalyov of the Ukrainian General Staff. Dependent on arms support The Ukrainians are clear that they must have more arms in order to win the war. The biggest donor is the United States, but now the Americans also supply weapons to Israel’s war. When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with Britain’s new Foreign Secretary David Cameron last week, he too expressed concern. – The world is not so focused on the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine, and this division of focus really does not help, Zelenskyj said. When the US Secretary of Defense visited Kyiv on Monday this week, he promised continued aid to Ukraine. MINER: The riverbank along the Dnipro used to be an idyll. Now the area is closed due to mines. Photo: Håvard Greger Hagen / news Refusing to leave the hometown Before the war, 330,000 inhabitants lived in Kherson. Today, three out of four have left the city. But Igor is determined to stay. FLAKS: Today you are not safe anywhere in Kherson. – It boils down to luck or bad luck, says Igor. Photo: Håvard Greger Hagen / news – I am Ukrainian and want to live in my city. I will be one of the last to leave here. – What are you most afraid of? – Not to survive. To not experience that one day we will win this war.
