Henrik Kristoffersen was furious and tried to approach the demonstrators, who he even threw snowballs at. Sebastian Foss Solevåg grabbed and dragged one of the demonstrators away from the city. – It was disturbing, says Julian Schütter to news. CLIMATE ACTIVIST: Alpinist Julian Schütter has a burning commitment to climate. Photo: Trygve Heide / news He is an alpine skier and climate campaigner, and has gone to great lengths to ensure that skiing must take action to save the snow on which they themselves are so dependent. The 25-year-old is himself in Colorado in the USA right now, where he has traveled to prepare for possible participation in the North American speed races in the coming weeks. From the TV chair, he witnessed the reactions of the Norwegians. – Some of the Norwegian athletes were violent. It’s not good. Nobody likes these protesters, but it is completely wrong to react with violence. The fact that many other athletes support the actions of the Norwegians is very disturbing. Our sport does not use its power to influence by glorifying power, says Schütter. Read more about Schütter’s commitment to the climate in this case: Fear for the safety of teammate Solevåg is surprising to Schütter describing that some of the Norwegians “were violent”. He entered the goal area about a minute after the demonstration started. There he took the banners from several of the demonstrators, before dragging the one protester away. The police came in soon after. – I would say that what I did was very undramatic and in no way violent, says Solevåg. – What do you think if he uses the word valdeleg? – It will be completely wrong. Unfortunately. He’s trying to get a reaction and he’s trying everything possible here, obviously. That is why one also gets a little irritated, because he gets very little support in the skiing community. It depends on the safety of an athlete, says Solevåg. The Norwegian then aims at his teammate Alexander “Sander” Steen Olsen, who was the next athlete at the start. Solevåg told VG after the race on Saturday that he feared that his teammate was already on the course, something he repeated to news. – Once he has started, there is no way to interrupt him, says Solevåg. What is elected? Violence is physical or psychological abuse to force one’s will, or to get an outlet for aggression. The Ministry of Justice defines violence as an expression of gross violations of fundamental human rights that it is a public task to overcome. Source: Great Norwegian Lexicon – Never heard of the guy Medan Solevåg is a former world champion in slalom and has two world cup victories in slalom, Schütter is relatively new to the world cup circus. The Austrian has 18th place as the best World Cup result, from the super-G in Beaver Creek last season. As a result of Schütter being a speed racer, while Solevåg is a slalom specialist, the Norwegian says that he does not know his alpine colleague. – I’ve never heard of the guy, myself. I have no problem with people demonstrating, but it should not be limited to just one athlete. Then you have to make it so that it affects everyone. DEMONSTRATION: In the target area, the demonstrators carried several banners with the text “Hört auf den klimarat”. Photo: PIERMARCO TACCA/AP THE POLICE CAME IN: Around a minute and a half after the demonstration started, the police came in. Photo: Piermarco Tacca / AP Photo: PIERMARCO TACCA / AP news has presented Schütter’s quote for Henrik Kristoffersen and his father Lars Kristoffersen. The latter states that he does not wish to comment on the case. Schütter made similar criticism directly against Kristoffersen on Instagram after the race, as discussed by VG on Tuesday. There he wrote that it was a big mistake to intervene by force. Kristoffersen wrote on Instagram that he is someone who takes action when he thinks someone is being treated unfairly. – There is no doubt that the climate is a major challenge, and I do not want to go against it. At the same time, I believe that disrupting a cultural event will never be the right time or place, Kristoffersen wrote. Supporting the demonstrators During the demonstration on Saturday, the demonstrators sprayed the snow in the target area orange and held up a banner: “Hört auf den klimarat”. Listen to the Climate Council. The climate group “Letzte Generation Österreich” was behind the demonstration. Schütter has previously joined the group and shown solidarity with their work. He did not know in advance about the demonstration in Gurgl, but says that he supports their cause. – I think it is sad that such protests go so far, or that we are in a situation where such protests happen. It is very sad that athletes end up in this illegal situation because the politicians are not doing their job. – But I understand the activists who see no other options than using this platform to create change, says the Austrian. – Do you think the demonstration will have an effect? – Such protests have the potential to change society. There is evidence that previous protests have worked, he says. SUPPORT: Schütter in a train with the climate activists of “Letzte Generation Österreich” – Last Generation Austria. Photo: Trygve Heide / news Tracks new demonstrations Schütter has not been in contact with Kristoffersen, Solevåg or any of the other athletes involved after the race on Saturday. But I am clear that they went too far in the counter-reactions to the demonstration. – It is not the job of the athletes to deal with protesters. That’s what we have police for. They can drag protesters away if they have to, but that is not the job of the athletes, believes the alpinist. – If he thinks it is bad that we go in, then the organizer must do a much better job. It was ridiculous how easily they (the protesters) got in. It took a very long time before the police were on the case, answers Solevåg. Schütter has himself expressed his support for the demonstration on Instagram, and believes it will not be the last time we see similar scenes. – It was the first time an alpine race was cancelled, but there are many other sporting events that have been canceled in the past. These groups are still growing, and I don’t think they will stop interrupting sporting events until the authorities start to take action.

ttn-69

The climate demonstration during the slalom race in Gurgl on Saturday did not go down well with the Norwegian alpine ski resorts.
