It has actually been one-sided. This is the opinion of Baskin, who was central to the last prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas in 2011. He has not been involved in the negotiations this year, but is the Israeli who has had the closest contact with the Hamas leadership in the last 17 years. At 10 o’clock on Thursday morning, a four-day ceasefire starts, according to Hamas. This paves the way for hostage exchange. Baskin himself pursues peace activism on the left side of Israeli politics. He believes a two-state solution is the way to peace in Gaza and the West Bank. Photo: Eskil Wie Furunes / news In exchange for 50 Israeli women and children, 150 Palestinians will be released from Israel. – Who has the most money on the deal? Hamas or Israel? – The people who are most affected by the agreement are the families. That is the first. The families have lived in a nightmare for 45 days where they have not known where their loved ones have gone. – On a strategic level, I think that Hamas benefits the most, because they need time to regroup, re-arm, move their forces. The museum square in Tel Aviv has been renamed Hostage Square. Here, the families of those missing have gathered for six weeks to demand that Israel do more to get them home. Photo: AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP Nevertheless, he says that the soldiers in the Israeli military will take advantage of the break, because they get to go home, ensure a good night’s sleep and a hot meal. The agreement between Israel and Hamas also makes it possible to get more emergency aid into Gaza, and bans Israeli drones in the area for six hours every day. If Hamas releases more hostages, the Israelis are open to extending the ceasefire. A vulnerable ceasefire Even after the declaration on Wednesday night, both Israel and Hamas are ready with their finger on the trigger. Baskin describes the agreement that Israel and Hamas have now entered into as “extremely” vulnerable, and believes that there is much that can still go wrong. – First of all, there is no trust between the parties, so the fact that a ceasefire has been declared does not mean that someone has to keep it. There will be soldiers in very vulnerable positions. This is how the ceasefire can be broken, according to Baskin: A fighter who belongs to Hamas or Islamic Jihad can find himself shooting at an Israeli tank inside Gaza. Thousands of Palestinians can find themselves returning to northern Gaza in defiance of orders from Israel . Will the Israeli soldiers fire shots into the air? Will they shoot at people? What if some of the hostages who come back to Israel are not alive? What if Israel finds where Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is during the ceasefire? Are they going to respect the agreement, or kill him? – That would be a turning point in the war, says Baskin. The soldiers at last The list of the Israeli hostages who are being released has not yet been published, but Israeli media reports that it is about 30 children, 8 mothers and 12 other women. If everything goes according to the agreement and they are allowed to go home, Hamas will still have around 150 hostages. How many of them are alive is not known. Baskin believes that Hamas will try to get rid of women, children and the sick as soon as possible, but keep the soldiers. He believes they are “the most important negotiating card”. The parents of Omer Neutra, an American-Israeli soldier who is being held hostage by Hamas, are asking for help to get him released. The picture was taken on 14 November. Photo: Mark Schiefelbein / AP – I think that in return for releasing the soldiers, Hamas will demand that all Palestinian prisoners in Israel be released. At least 7,000 Palestinians are imprisoned in Israeli prisons, according to Baskin. – I don’t know if Hamas will be willing to enter into a compromise on that. It is an agreement that will not be adopted at this time. Unlike the 2011 agreement, Baskin was among those who contributed to the release of the young Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit after being held prisoner by Hamas for five years. Shalit was captured during a border raid in 2006, and released in 2011. Prime Minister Netanyahu sent Baskin a personal letter of thanks after the handover. Photo: Håvard Greger Hagen / Privat But those whom Israel released in return are the same people who lead Gaza today, says Baskin. – This is far too unpleasant a memory for the Israelis to enter into such an agreement again. – I hate to say it, but it seems that our soldiers have to be rescued by Israeli special forces. The letter of thanks from Netanyahu still hangs on Baskin’s wall. Photo: Eskil Wie Furunes / news Believes the prisoners are not dangerous for Israel “None” of the 150 women and children that Israel has promised to release are “important to Hamas”, according to Baskin. Many are in custody without having a verdict against them, and many are young people under the age of 18 who have thrown stones at Israeli soldiers, he continued. – There is no real danger involved in releasing these people, and I expect that since they are all from the West Breidda that they will be sent back to their homes there. Many of the Palestinians in Israeli custody are young people who are guilty of throwing stones at soldiers and settlers, says Baskin. Photo: ZAIN JAAFAR / AFP – What does your gut tell you? Will this deal go through as planned, or will it be a mess? – I can only say what I hope. I have no idea what is happening on the ground. – But I hope it goes well, and that this is the first stage before far more hostages are released. Even if it means a longer ceasefire and a delay in Israel’s goal, which is to destroy Hamas’s means of controlling Gaza.

ttn-69

– Hamas controls the negotiations.
