The self-examination is in full swing in the Labor Party after what the party itself describes as a “historically bad election”. Next weekend, 130 party members will attend a washing-up meeting during the strategy conference at Gardermoen. And that is a fundamental problem for the Labor Party. It is a crisis of confidence, she says. – We must have a clearer political project. Because when the Labor Party is in government, the differences will decrease. And we have to show that we are capable of solving the climate crisis, continues Hoem, who sits on Ap’s central board. – Has lost his grip Hoem receives news in AUF’s headquarters, a few floors above the party office on Youngstorget. Election posters from the youth organisation’s 120-year history hang on the walls. “The salt of the party”, as AUF is called. And Hoem’s message probably stings the wounds after a local election in which the Labor Party lost its status as the country’s largest. Because the problems did not arise in the autumn, she believes. – We have been too low for too long, says the AUF leader and continues: – We have lost our grip on young voters. Unfortunately, I do not think that the Labor Party is a party that young people feel appeals to them. Hoem believes that support for Ap should be well over 30 per cent. But there is a long way to go. At the election, Ap went back in 236 municipalities, lost 41 mayors and got a result of 21.6 per cent. Clearer project Increased minimum benefits to reduce differences. Stricter climate policy and measures to ensure young people the opportunity to obtain their own home without help from wealthy parents. It is among the demands that AUF is now making to the parent party. – People must know what will be left after the Labor Party has ruled. We are cutting kindergarten prices, after-school prices, and doing a lot of good. But we also have to show that this is part of a bigger story: People should get better in their lives, says Hoem. But the Labor Party’s own post-election survey suggests that the opposite is the case, and that people have gotten worse. In the survey, 58.5 per cent answered that their own finances had deteriorated in the past year. Only 6.8 percent have experienced an improvement. How Ap evaluates the election defeat On 13 September, party secretary Kjersti Stenseng promised a thorough evaluation of the election results and the election campaign. Three different surveys among voters, members and list candidates are the basis for the evaluation. The investigations have resulted in a strategy document, which will be discussed at a separate strategy conference with 130 delegates at Gardermoen next weekend. Together with the evaluation, a separate document has been drawn up on the way forward towards the next parliamentary election in 2025. The strategy towards the 2025 election will be adopted at a national board meeting in April next year. St\u00f8re’s role In the Labor Party’s member survey after the election, it appears that the party leadership’s efforts in the election campaign collect 4.98 points on a scale from 1\u201310. In return, the mayoral candidates achieve a score of 6.78. The Labor memorandum is ten pages long and summarizes the feedback from three surveys among voters, members and list candidates. Nevertheless, the AUF leader does not want to hang party leader Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re out to dry. In the ten years he has almost led the party, the election results have mostly been weak in a historical sense. – The only thing that can solve this is for us to lift as a group. I attended the national meeting and unanimously elected Jonas as our leader, and I fully support that. Often when you make a bad choice, the debate becomes very much about the person. Then we don’t take the necessary steps needed to build the project that people have faith in, she says. Will not set any goal – It is serious when trust in us is so low, says party secretary Kjersti Stenseng to news. – A clearer political project will be able to bring more young voters back to the Labor Party, says AUF. Do you agree with that? – Yes, I think Astrid is absolutely right about that. We have many good individual cases, both in the long election campaign and after we came into government in autumn 2021. But for the voters, the political project has been too unclear. We have a job to do there, says Stenseng. Photo: Mats R\u00f8nning \/ news Where the AUF leader clearly says that Ap must again get above 30 per cent, Stenseng will no longer quantify any target. She did so in a much-cited VG interview from 2018, in which she stated, among other things, that Ap should not fall below 30 percent support over time. – At what level should the Labor Party be? – It is always difficult to put a number on it. But our goal must be for the Labor Party to grow. But I’m not going to say 25, 30 or 35 percent. Now we have a big job in managing to increase support for the Labor Party, says Stenseng.
