The otherwise happy cat breathed and pestered far more than usual, which made the owner stunned. Struggling to breathe – I first thought he was dragging with an animal, but when I lifted him up, I smelled that he was soaked in fuel, she tells news. “Nusse” is back on his feet after he was soaked in petrol. Here with owner Lise Hogstad Elvestad. Photo: Robert Hansen / news Elvestad first tried to flush the poor cat, but quickly realized that the cat had to go straight to the vet. Upon arrival, “Nusse” struggled to breathe. He received immediate help. – They washed him and removed the fur in the areas that were worst, she says. The first thing the vet wanted an answer to was whether the family lives at Presterød in Tønsberg. Cats with similar experiences have come from there in the past. Elvestad could confirm that. – Then they recommended me to report the incident, because it is the fourth case in two years, she tells news. She thinks that’s scary. – It’s absolutely awful. I do not understand that it is possible to do something so vicious. She hopes people are good at looking a little extra at their cats this summer. – If I had not been home, he would not be alive today, Elvestad believes. Repeats in the same neighborhood On a neighborhood page on Facebook, the events are hotly debated. Several tell of similar experiences. Charlotte Skontorp’s cat died in the autumn of 2020 after being run over by fuel in the same neighborhood. It had then been in an animal hospital in Oslo for several days. Charlotte Skontorp has experienced that two cats are soaked in fuel. Photo: Private – They announced that the skin would detach from the body, and then we announced that we wanted it killed. She fell asleep shortly after, and escaped several pains, she says. The family got a new cat, but only seven months later also received the same rude treatment. It survived, but later suffered from asthma as a result of the incident. – I have heard of several cases in the immediate area. I think it is quite incredible that it works, says Skontorp to news. “Amy” was soaked with fuel in the spring of 2021. This is the second time the family has experienced this. Photo: Private The family tried to find out for themselves what had happened, without success. – It is difficult to find out something like that, and certainly quite difficult to investigate for the police, says Skontorp, who reported both cases. May end with chemical pneumonia The general manager at Evidensia Animal Hospital in Tønsberg, Anina Andersen, confirms the incidents. They also treated “Nusse” last week. – We think it is strange that all the cases we have had are within a small geographical area, she says. Anina Andersen, general manager at Evidensia animal hospital in Tønsberg. Photo: Robert Hansen / news Andersen is convinced that this is not accidental, and that people are behind it. – A cat does not seek fuel, because this is a smell they do not like. These are not cats that have come across anything. They are wet from head to toe. It’s a little rainy, she thinks. Close contact with fuel is often fatal for cats if they do not receive treatment, says the veterinarian. – The cat will automatically try to wash clean. This spreads to the mucous membranes, which in turn go to the lung tissue. It can cause chemical pneumonia, she explains. Wants the cases to be reported The head of investigation at the police in Tønsberg, Knut Erik Ågrav, confirms that the case has recently been registered with them. – We want such incidents to be reported, he says to news. The case has been sent to the section for finances and environmental crime in the police district. “Nusse” is fortunately on the road to recovery. – The first two days he was a little slack, but the third day he ran straight out again, the owner says relieved.

ttn-69

Lise Hogstad Elvestad was sitting at home in the garden with her one-year-old on her lap when the family’s four-legged friend came in through the gate.
