The Norwegian Board of Health has followed the air strike closely, as it has had consequences for patient transport in Norway. Yesterday, the state administrator in Nordland and Troms and Finnmark had an urgent meeting about the air strike, and the consequences for the patient service in northern Norway. Several hospitals in northern Norway have announced that the strike will create challenges for the health service. There have been problems with getting critical personnel back to work, as well as getting substitutes in place. – The challenge increases towards the weekend and beyond next week, says Einar Bugge, acting director at the University Hospital of Northern Norway (UNN). CHALLENGING: Acting director at the University Hospital in Northern Norway, Einar Bugge, says that the staffing situation can be challenging towards the weekend. Photo: Jan Fredrik Frantzen / UNN According to him, there are gradually more employees who do not return home from holiday due to the strike. – This is perhaps the biggest challenge in the long run. In addition, there will be more substitutes this weekend. If these do not come, the hospital can face major challenges. – There is not much we can do to get people back to work. It is the individual’s responsibility to work when you go. Municipal health service is struggling Health, care and welfare in Sør-Varanger municipality is struggling to maintain normal operations as a result of the air strike. The municipal management has participated in a status meeting with the state administrator, the health trust and the Norwegian Board of Health. Mayor of Sør-Varanger municipality, Lena Norum Bergeng says that the situation is both serious and precarious. – The situation is serious, because we do not get people back from vacation. We have had to scale down our offer, and it goes especially hard beyond home-based care, says Norum Bergeng. SERIOUS: Mayor Lena Norum Bergeng says that the home service, among other things, is not allowed to be washed at people’s homes due to low staffing. Photo: Kristina Kalinina / news The mayor says that they currently lack so many people at work that they cannot perform certain home services. – We hope that there will be a solution very, very soon. If not, you have to go in with a compulsory wage board. However, she says that there is no danger to life and health yet. Has taken down some operations Ida Sundby, communications consultant at Finnmark Hospital, says that the hospital is vulnerable with regard to the personnel situation. She says that the health trust has already taken down some operations, both outpatient and operations. – Next week, a number of substitutes will come, and we have not been able to get alternative transport at the moment. We work continuously to find alternative solutions. One solution could be to recall personnel from vacation. STRIKE FRAMEWORK: Finnmark Hospital has taken down some planned operations. Photo: Stian Strøm – We have employees who do what they can to ensure proper operation with us, among other things, there are personnel who go on double shifts, says Sundby. Will be demanding next week – We know from yesterday’s meeting that the rosters next week are even more challenging. More people go on holiday, and if the strike continues, health personnel are in other countries or at holiday resorts, says Elisabeth Vik Aspaker, state administrator in Troms and Finnmark. DEMANDING: – It is a demanding situation, says Elisabeth Vik Aspaker, state administrator in Troms and Finnmark. Photo: Tonje Hareland Acting county doctor in Troms and Finnmark, Astrid Teigland, says that the situation for the health service right now is vulnerable, but under control. She also says that it may be more difficult to staff next week if the strike continues. – Possibly some planned treatment may have to go out in favor of taking care of the emergency preparedness, because the staffing of the hospitals can be so small. LO: The hospitals do not plan well enough LO believes the problems stem from the fact that the hospitals do not plan well enough, and that they are based on excessive use of temp agencies. – Poor planning at the hospitals cannot be a justification for a possible compulsory pay committee for the SAS pilots, says LO deputy head Sissel Skoghaug. She says the hospitals make themselves vulnerable by planning operations by hiring temporary staff instead of permanent employees. POOR PLANNING: The LO deputy leader believes that poor planning in the hospitals cannot be a justification for a possible compulsory pay committee for the SAS pilots. Photo: Jan Lillehamre / Fagforbundet It should also be entirely possible to transport patients and employees where they are going even if the SAS pilots go on strike, Skoghaug believes. There are several other players who operate passenger transport in northern Norway, and it should not be impossible to get critical personnel to the hospitals, according to the LO deputy leader. She also rejects claims that there are no realistic transport options for patients in the region. – Patients are mainly treated within their health region, and transport of patients largely takes place with other transport than with SAS, she says. Acting director at UNN, Einar Brugge, says that they do the holiday settlement as best they can. – We treat all our employees to holidays, and then we need substitutes to get this going.

ttn-69

– The consequences of the legal labor dispute in SAS do not constitute an immediate danger to life and health, the Norwegian Board of Health writes in an SMS to news.
