From a depth of 12 meters in the Oslofjord, researcher Andr\u00e9 Staalstr\u00f8m has pulled up a large container made of glass and metal.  Now a nasty stench is spreading in the boat. Photo: Rolf Petter Olaisen \/ news The senior researcher from the Norwegian Institute for Water Research explains that the stench is a sign that the water is dead and uninhabitable for fish, shrimp and other animals.  We are in the so-called Toad Sea, which lies deep inside the Oslofjord.  But there are many places in the fjord like this.  When they take water samples, they find the same foul-smelling water at Steilene outside Nesodden, at B\u00e6rum and in Bunnefjorden.  And south of Dr\u00f8bak, both Drammensfjorden and Iddefjorden are hard hit.  The red areas show parts of the Oslofjord where the water at the bottom is without oxygen. Photo: NIVA Originating from do Andr\u00e9 Staalstr\u00f8m has taken the smelly water and poured it into a small transparent glass bottle.  With a pipette, he adds a drop of a chemical substance.  He shakes the bottle as if it were a milkshake.  Inside the bottle, the water turns milky white.  The sample on the left is from the bottom of the fjord.  The whiter, the less oxygen.  The yellow color of the sample on the right shows a lot of oxygen in the water surface.  Photo: Rolf Petter Olaisen \/ news &#8211; The white color means that it is completely empty of oxygen, he states.  This means that conditions are unlivable for cod, mussels and prawns.  It&#8217;s the nitrogen&#8217;s fault.  A lot of it comes from our dogs.  And from the farmers&#8217; fields.  Efforts are being made to limit harmful emissions.  Among other things, the municipalities must build better sewage treatment plants.  This will take a long time.  But there is another and artificial way of breathing life into the sea.  And much faster.  Water samples in the Oslofjord show that the water at the bottom is dead in many places.  The solution is: For 40 years, researchers have been talking about a possible method, says Staalstr\u00f8m.  A pump at the surface directs fresh and oxygen-rich water down to the bottom.  This should create what the researchers call &#8220;stirring&#8221;, which causes the dead bottom water to rise, mix with the other water and disappear.  In this way, the bottom can become habitable again for crabs, scrub and starfish.  This drawing shows how the pump should work.  Photo: Lars Golmen \/ NIVA &#8211; It was considered putting a pump out in the Bunnefjord 20 years ago.  But then it was concluded that it would be too expensive, says Staalstr\u00f8m.  Now NIVA is working to get a pump set up in Paddehavet, which is a small sea area of \u200b\u200b120 acres at Bekkelaget in Oslo. B\u00f8e, who chairs B\u00e6rum&#8217;s planning committee, believes that it will certainly be possible for the municipality to help pay for a pump solution.  But above all, he thinks that this is something the business world wants to be involved in.  He is particularly thinking of Fornebu, where there are many companies with an interest in the sea and the environment.
