The day after Johnson said he wanted to run for prime minister, Sunak launched himself as a leading candidate in a well-directed election campaign video. There he made clear blows to his former boss and his dishonesty, which was the main reason why Boris Johnson was eventually pushed out of Downing Street. Sunak’s resignation and conduct led Johnson’s staff to light all the plugs against the new prime ministerial candidate. “Traitorous asshole”, it came from an official in the prime minister’s residence, according to FT. “Do we meet the moment with honesty and seriousness, or by telling ourselves comforting tales?” said the prime ministerial candidate Sunak in a clear statement to Boris Johnson’s leadership. Photo: Screenshot \/ Twitter A campaign website also shows that Sunak has been ready for this for a while. Several British media write that Sunak set up a campaign website, readyforrishi.com, as early as 23 December 2021. That is four days after the first picture from partygate was leaked. He is also said to have launched a new and similar campaign website, ready4rishi.com, the day after Johnson announced that he was leaving. Black campaigns abound As more and more leadership candidates come to light, the littering within the Conservative Party has begun in full swing. Where Foreign Minister Liz Truss, along with most of the other candidates, has almost fought to promise the biggest tax cut, Sunak has signaled that he does not want to cut. Foreign Minister Liz Truss has for a long time appeared in many pictures strikingly similar to Tory legend Margaret Thatcher, something many have interpreted as tactical maneuvers against the post of prime minister. Photo: Screenshot \/ Twitter In a blackening document that has abounded among conservative MPs, it is stated that “there is nothing conservative about this agenda of Rishi Sunak with high taxes and large expenses”, according to FT. Had to defend himself Dirt has also happened to the new Minister of Finance and the prime ministerial candidate Nadhim Zahawi. On Sunday, he had to defend himself against debts that he is under investigation for possible tax fraud. It is assumed that the information comes from party colleagues in the Conservative Party. “If I become prime minister, I will publish my tax returns annually,” Zahawi said in his defense in an interview with Sky News. The recently appointed finance minister Nadhim Zahawi has been blamed for tax fraud, probably from party colleagues within the Conservative party. Photo: DANIEL LEAL \/ AFP Two leadership candidates are ready next week – Usually the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are the obvious candidates, but it is not that simple this year, says Associate Professor of Political Science at UiO and expert in the UK, \u00d8ivind Bratberg. Political scientist \u00d8ivind Bratberg expects intense bargaining behind the scenes in connection with the leadership dispute in the Conservative party. Photo: Vidar Ruud \/ NTB scanpix The desire to replace Boris Johnson as soon as possible, combined with the increasingly bitter tone in the Conservative party, explains why the committee today announced how they would approve of the election process. Already next week, there will only be two candidates left, said executive secretary of the 1922 committee, Bob Blackman. It will be hectic days ahead, Bratberg predicts. – After a quarter as a candidate drops out, there will be intense positioning between the rounds. Then there will be a lot of bargaining behind the scenes about who they should stand behind, he says. Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson says he will not take part among the many candidates vying to take over after him. – As they know, there is a competition going on, and I do not want to harm anyone’s opportunities by giving me support, he says. Raises competition requirements With the advancement, the committee has sharpened the requirements to join the second round of the leadership battle. Where each candidate in 2019 trong support from only 8 members of parliament, the 1922 committee decided that each candidate this year needs as many as 20 behind him to join the first round. How the new party leader and prime minister is elected Everyone who wants to run as a candidate for the party leadership position must be nominated by 20 party colleagues in the British Parliament. The limit has been raised from 8 to 20 nominations for the process of choosing Boris Johnson’s successor to go faster. The nomination of candidates will take place on Tuesday 12 July. When the nominated candidates are ready, the voting in the party group starts. The first round of voting will take place on Wednesday 13 July. Everyone who gets less than 30 votes quits, the rest goes on to the second round of voting. In round number two, it is the candidate who gets the fewest votes that must go out. This vote will be held on Thursday 14 July. Thereafter, the parliamentary group continues to vote until there are two candidates left. According to the planned schedule, it will hopefully be decided during Monday 18 July. The two candidates are running in the big round of voting, where around 200,000 ordinary party members around the country will have their say. The result will be announced on 5 September. The person who gets the most votes becomes the new party leader for the Conservative party and takes over as prime minister, unless something unexpected happens. New rules were introduced on Monday because several new members had been elected to the committee. – It will be a very steep curve, where the battle is between many different candidates. Who the two will be is really not decided, says Bratberg. He adds: – It is quite possible that a “dark horse” will come in.
