The progress of the collective right, in size and in breadth, has brought us into a crisis. That the party leadership does not want to call this a crisis reinforces the crisis. The reason is simple: A signal that this is indeed a major election defeat, but that it can be rectified by an evaluation of the election campaign and hard work, takes attention away from the very fundamental: The election defeat is not technical. It is political. We are facing a loss of confidence among our voters. Therefore, the worst thing that can happen now is that, as the days and weeks go by, we get used to the new situation. We start to think and say to each other that this will probably correct itself. That we will certainly be the largest in 2025, and that we will then retain government power. It is easy to think this way after so many years – 99 – as Norway’s largest party. And when we have government power. Some may even want to be led to believe that the Conservative Party is in a permanent crisis after the share scandal. It is a dangerous trap. The recognition of defeat must be real. Simply because the defeat is real. We are in a new situation. The Labor Party and LO have much to be proud of. It is crucial that we continue to be proud. But not arrogant. The new situation that the election results have created must be met with humility. The aim must be as it has always been: To be and to be seen as the advocates and representatives of wage earners and ordinary people in politics and in democracy. Norwegian social democracy’s political self-image must not be lost in the self-examination. Our task is to govern society politically so that community and solidarity are secured for the future. The development of inequality must be stopped with all available means. The material prosperity enjoyed by many in Norway today is the true-born child of social democracy. Our support in the future requires that we take on the social struggle with the right-wing parties and political capital with clarity and heavy self-confidence: Individual freedom rests on the shoulders of a strong communal society and a strong trade union movement. The Labor Party cannot manage this fight alone now. Voters gave the center/left a historically strong mandate in the general election just two years ago. A united left has the responsibility of managing this support so that the population identifies with us and has confidence in our solutions. It’s urgent. A deep and serious crisis such as we now have cannot be solved by doing more of the same, or by hoping that it will pass. We know that from hard experience. Such a crisis must be met with a fundamentally new dynamic, with real change. The Labor Party must now take the initiative to form a majority government. SV must enter the government, as LO has long advocated. To those in SV who might think that the party is not strategically served by saving the pieces of Ap, I would say: This is no longer about party tactics. It is about a fateful moment for the Norwegian left – and thus about what our country will look like in the coming decades. About how we are going to solve huge challenges such as the climate crisis, the society of inequality and the huge tasks facing the welfare state. We can only manage this together. Therefore, SV must take responsibility now. We must come together to rule the country. SV and for that matter Rødt must stop criticizing the Labor Party, and correct it where it belongs. They have to see what the alternative is now. “This won’t work, because the Center Party won’t”, is the refrain we hear about this. But listen: All of the Center Party’s good and fundamental values are linked to a strong communal society. The entire agricultural industry is collectively organized. The Odels Acts, the Concession Acts and import protection need political protection. Centralization and a weaker district policy is the policy of the right-wing parties. In the face of such a strong right wing – with a strong and self-confident Progress Party – of which we now see the contours – I hope that my friends in the Center Party will not stand in the way of a majority government in which SV is a part. The right-wing parties and the power of money have been given free rein to weaken the Labor Party, the trade union movement and thus also social democracy, in a decisive way. This will in turn significantly weaken the position of working people in future society. The trade union movement in Norway is strong, but it needs political support. And the opposite: If the left is to succeed, it requires the support and power of the trade union movement. This means that the trade union movement cannot get used to the new situation and withdraw either. Because without a socially conscious trade union movement, social democracy is nothing. Some may think that this is not the time and place for conflict and discussion about the choice of path. That the government and the party leadership need peace of mind. I think that is fundamentally wrong. We have to take responsibility for saving the left, social democracy – and the Labor Party – now. Before it’s too late.

ttn-69

The election result is a historic defeat for the Labor Party.
