In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, he speaks openly about several topics for which he personally, and Saudi Arabia as a country, have been criticized in the West. For the first time, the Crown Prince is commenting, among other things, on the accusations that the country engages in sports laundering. He says it is solely about financial goals, and points out that Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product (GDP) has increased by 1 percent as a result of the investment. – If sports washing is going to increase our GDP by 1 per cent, then we will continue with sports washing, says the crown prince in the interview. Saudi Arabian football clubs have, with the support of the state, brought in some of the world’s biggest football stars in recent months. Here is Cristiano Ronaldo during a celebration of Saudi Arabia’s foundation day in February. Ronaldo, who is considered one of the world’s biggest football stars, has been a member of the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr since January. Photo: AL-NASSR FC \/ Reuters – I don’t care Saudi Arabia’s regime has been described as highly authoritarian and associated with a number of human rights violations. To change the negative reputation, they have been accused of spending huge sums to make themselves more attractive as a nation Saudi Arabia has, among other things, invested billions of kroner in sports in recent years. Most conspicuous has been the last six months, where the country has brought in some of the world’s biggest football stars to play in the Saudi Arabian league. The crown prince cares little that this has caused critics to accuse the country of trying to wash itself through sport. – I do not care. I have a 1 percent increase in GDP as a result of sports and am betting on a further 1.5 percent increase. Call it what you want, we will get the 1.5 percent, he says. The Khashoggi murder a “mistake” Bin Salman was almost ostracized in Western countries after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul in 2018. The UN determined that it was an extrajudicial execution, and the CIA concluded that the order came from Mohammed bin Salman. During the interview, the crown prince describes the incident as a “mistake” and “painful”, and says he has worked to change the country’s system – to “ensure that everyone is safe”. The Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is said to have been killed on the orders of bin Salman, according to the CIA. Photo: Hasan Jamali \/ AP – We took all legal steps that a country can take, he says and claims that everyone involved in Khashoggi’s murder is in prison. – We are also trying to change the security system to be sure that such mistakes never happen again. In the last five years, such things have not happened. It is not part of what Saudi Arabia has been doing for the last 100 years, says bin Salman. Criticizes own laws At the end of August, a retired teacher was sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia after posting messages on X that were critical of the authorities in the country. The Crown Prince confirms the sentence during the interview and calls it “shameful”. He admits that there are some of the laws in Saudi Arabia that he does not like. – It’s something we don’t like, he says about the death sentence for the teacher. – Can’t you change that, asks the interviewer. – We do our best. We have already changed some of the laws, and are trying to prioritize. But I’m not happy with it. We are ashamed of it. But the legal system must follow the law, and I cannot tell a judge what to do, because that is against the law, claims the crown prince. He adds: – Do we have bad laws? Yes. Should we change it? Yes. Asked if he thinks the teacher will end up being executed, bin Salman says he hopes that will change. – There are several steps in the legal process. I hope that at the next stage the judge is a bit more experienced and looks at it completely differently, he says.
\n

\n
ttn-69 <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Bin Salman is Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader and rarely gives interviews.
