Norwegian’s first Dreamliner in for landing for the first time Photo: NTB Now interest in the planes is completely absent. No airline wants the two planes despite the fact that they are not old. The smallest version of the Dreamliner is not particularly profitable to run long-distance traffic with. They were the first two Dreamliner aircraft Norwegian put into service with Sonja Henie and Thor Heyerdahl as proud tail heroes. – All the Dreamliner aircraft that Norwegian had were delivered back to their owners after the pandemic. All of them are flying today, with the exception of the two that have been taken apart, says director of communications at Norwegian, Esben Thuman Photo: Norwegian – Norwegian delivered both aircraft back to the owner in May 2021, says director of communications at Norwegian Esben Thuman. Norwegian originally leased the two aircraft from the leasing company DP Aircraft Irland. Boeing 787 Dreamliner The Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” is a twin-engine, medium-sized, wide-body, long-haul aircraft developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The aircraft takes between 210 and 310 passengers, depending on seat configuration, and has a lower fuel consumption than previous models. As much as 20% less fuel than the Boeing 767, which is somewhat similar in size. It is also the first airliner to be constructed primarily with composite materials. The Boeing 787 was Boeing’s new major venture. The aircraft stands out with its four-panel windscreen, sound-absorbing parts on the aircraft engines, new types of wings and softer nose section. The aircraft has the same type rating as the larger 777, which allows qualified pilots to fly both aircraft, as they are of similar design. Source: Wikipedia Norwegian’s first two Dreamliner aircraft were of the Boeing 787–8 type and were first registered EI-LNA and EI-LNB and were delivered in June and August 2013. They were both grounded when the company’s long-haul venture ended in 2021. Problem aircraft Both aircraft were delivered with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, which would eventually lead to major problems. Parts in the engines did not measure up and several airlines experienced that the engines ran hot because the engines wore out faster than was normal. In addition, there were problems with the manufacturer not having enough capacity to produce spare parts or having new engines in stock. Now both planes have been reduced to just a shell, when all parts and equipment have been dismantled from both planes. Careful planning for reuse Because no Boeing 787 aircraft has been taken out of commercial service to date, it is almost impossible to obtain used parts. EirTrade Aviation hopes to become the market leader in the supply of used parts for this type of aircraft because used parts provide reuse benefits. The Dreamliner is being prepared to be brought into the hangar for dismantling Photo: EirTrade Aviation The company spent over twelve months planning how the two planes would be taken apart. Rough machines that would “chew” the planes to pieces were not to be used here. The planes were towed into a hangar where all parts, screws and equipment were carefully dismantled, registered and packed. The first thing to be picked from the planes were the Rolls-Royce engines Photo: EirTrade Aviation When it became known that the two planes were to be cut up, the company in Ireland started receiving requests from customers who wanted to buy the parts. It took two months to dismantle the two planes. Questions are received weekly for the parts from the two Norwegian planes. According to Flight Global, which first wrote about the matter, there is huge demand for used parts for Dreamliners, mostly because the production of spare parts is slow and often delayed, and because these parts are sold at a reduced price. Boeing has calculated that a Boeing 787-8 should be able to have at least 25 years in the air as a commercial aircraft, and today there are over 1,000 aircraft of the 787 series in traffic worldwide. Return to the factory Boeing will research how the fuselage made of composite material has withstood flying for ten years Photo: EirTrade Aviation Boeing has bought the fuselages for the planes themselves. The American aircraft manufacturer will now research what happens to the carbon surface of aircraft, such as the Boeing 787. It is interesting for the factory to find out what happens when an aircraft approaches the last lap of a life, and even if the two 787-8 are more than ten years old when they were taken apart, it is valuable for the manufacturer to collect data from the hulls and find out what has happened to these during the ten years they were on the wings. No mold in the planes Norwegian’s Dreamliner planes were stored in several places during the pandemic, including at Oslo Airport Photo: NTB Some online chat groups claimed that the planes were stored too poorly during the pandemic and that they were exposed to moisture and suffered mold and fungus attacks in the cabins . Communication director Esben Thuman at Norwegian rejects that claim to news. He says that all maintenance was done in accordance with established procedures and in collaboration with the owner of the aircraft. – We even had heating inside the planes to prevent moisture from forming, he concludes.

ttn-69

Norwegian was the proud company that was going to revolutionize the long-distance market with low-cost air travel and bet on the completely newly developed Dreamliner, or Boeing 787.
