Now he pays a deposit of 12,300 kroner and the same amount for two months rent of a dormitory he can not use now. Maybe he will never use it. Then and now When Coordinated Admissions was established in 1994, the application deadline for higher education was 15 April. The application was to be filled in with a pen on separate paper forms and sent in a separate envelope in the mail. From July 20, it was just a matter of waiting at the mailbox for an answer. It does not only frustrate the future students. Need time to plan the autumn semester Curt Rice is the rector of 6400 students at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). In the autumn, he will welcome 1,500 new students. He does not know who they are until August. – I think it’s pretty late, says Rice. The Rector of NMBU, Curt Rice, needs plenty of time to plan. Photo: H\u00e5kon Sparre \/ NMBU He would like to have the results in the first of May. First and foremost, he thinks of those who will move. – And not least those who get a no and do not come in. Then they have to invent something new and change plans. He believes NMBU could have used the time to plan the autumn semester better if the intake was clear earlier. Ideally, they should have finished this before employees take a holiday in July. I think it could have been like in the USA Rice thinks the Norwegian admission system could have been like the American one. – In Norway, we do not want to process applications for higher education without having received the very last grades from the last year of upper secondary school. In the USA, they have preliminary admissions where the students are informed that they have been admitted. And then they send the final diploma from high school. A lot of stress Aslak Berntsen Husby is the leader of the Student Organization. He believes students deserve more predictability. Aslak Berntsen Husby in the Student Organization thinks the admission system should have been faster. Photo: The student organization – We must have an admissions system that allows students to plan, and we do not have that today. This is especially difficult for those who are moving away from home for the first time, says Husby. He points to finding a place to live in an unknown place. It offers a lot of stress. Students should preferably get a place to live long before they have been approved for the study place. After all, it is first-come-first-served that applies to having an “all right” place to live. No one wants to be put on a waiting list while they live temporarily a little here and a little there after the study has started. – Not possible with current rules Coordinated admissions coordinates admissions to 27 universities and colleges and 23 vocational colleges. This year, they have received 135,000 applications with a total of 760,000 application options. Sveinung Skule, director of Coordinated Admissions, says there is still a lot of paperwork. Photo: Competence Norway Director Sveinung Skule believes it is not possible to make the case processing much faster, as the admission rules are today. – Examinations in upper secondary school are conducted in May and in June. And then there are censorship and appeal deadlines. This will not be completed until the turn of the month June-July. Skule sees a solution. Exams in high school must come earlier. But then there must also be changes in several other countries. Still a lot of manual work – Even though we in Norway have a very efficient system with electronic diplomas today, not everyone has it. Skule mentions, among other things, applicants from abroad. The number of applications has increased by 40.5 per cent from 2005 to 2022, while the number of caseworkers has been constant during the period. – It is still a long way to go before everything goes digital. But we have one of the most efficient recording systems in the world. We can be proud of that, says Sveinung Skule. – We have an admissions system that has served us well, in that everyone applies in the same place and you do not have to send applications in many places, says Minister of Research and Higher Education Ola Borten Moe. At the same time, he says that he understands that it would have been better and received an answer earlier. Photo: Mari Ranheim \/ news Minister of Research and Higher Education Ola Borten Moe writes in an e-mail to news that he understands that it would have been both easier and better if students could have received answers earlier. But that it is currently not possible. However, the government has appointed a committee to look at the entire regulations and come up with proposals for what admission to higher education can look like in the future. – They must, among other things, give their recommendations for deadlines for the coordinated admission. We look forward to taking a closer look at the committee’s recommendations, which they are scheduled to deliver towards the end of the year.
