Photo: news – The pitch should not have been approved, it is not justifiable, she says of the pitch at Grorud, on which Lyn played a match on Saturday 9 September at the latest. On Wednesday, news confirms that Birkelund’s teammate Maria Fink has also torn her cruciate ligament. She was injured during the weekend’s home game against Rosenborg. – This is certainly not how it should be when we are a team that plays in Norway’s top league. So, it is very annoying that that pitch is even approved to play Toppserie matches on, and that we have to train on it, says Birkelund. She believes that several Toppserie clubs have the same problem with their pitches. Requirements for irrigation systems In the tournament regulations of the NFF, it is clearly stated that all playing fields must have an automatic irrigation system that covers the entire field. This applies to both natural and artificial grass. Nevertheless, Lyn gets to play its home games at Grorud – without a functioning irrigation system. – Why is Grorud’s track approved, even though the irrigation system is currently not working? – The track is generally approved based on known conditions. If there are conditions we are not aware of, we of course want to check it out when we are made aware of it, says Nils Fisketj\u00f8nn, competition director at the NFF. These are the rules for watering. The length of the grass at the time of the match must not be longer than 3.5 cm. The grass must be cut for approx. 4 \u2013 5 m wide fields and perpendicular to the side lines. The cutting direction alternates so that the playing field appears striped (crosswise). This will also help the assistant referees in their work. The playing field must have an automatic watering system. This facility must cover the entire playing field with an even distribution of water. The home team decides whether to water before the match and during the break. The organizing club must inform about its decision at the match meeting. If water is watered closer to kick-off than 1 hour and\/or during the break, the condition is that the entire pitch receives an even distribution of water within time intervals approved by the match referee. The same regulations apply to the Eliteserien for men. – There are also requirements for irrigation systems in the Toppserien. However, it is always the organizing club that decides whether it will be watered or not, he says. – If we learn that a lack of watering of pitches contributes to increasing the risk of injuries, we will of course look at the current regulations, he adds. Mats Thyli, general manager in Grorud, confirms to news that the irrigation system has been out of operation for some time. After being presented with the criticism from Nilssen, Torp and Birkelund, he replies: – Yes, we have challenges on the technical side of our facility, unfortunately. It is a complex and demanding issue that we are working hard to solve. Of course, I understand that there is a reaction to it. – Disturbing Regarding the risk of injury and the criticism from Torp and Birkelund, doctor Thor Einar Andersen says that there is a lot of research into cruciate ligament injuries in sports, but that they currently do not know enough about whether there is a connection between dry artificial grass pitches and cruciate ligament injuries. He is a doctor and professor at the Center for Sports Injury Research and medical director of the Sports Health Centre, NFF. – It is incredibly sad and disturbing to hear about yet another cruciate ligament injury in women’s football, he says and continues: – From research on male footballers, we know that high friction, whether the surface is artificial grass or grass, leads to more injuries, including cruciate ligament injuries. But so far there has been no research into the connection between watering or not watering artificial grass pitches and cruciate ligament injuries, says Andersen.
